The role
As the Environmental Officer, you will form part of a dynamic team responsible for undertaking environmental assessments of detailed and complex mining and petroleum proposals, as well as native vegetation clearing applications. You will also provide specialist advice on environmental legislation and policy to a wide range of stakeholders including the department’s Executive, other government agencies, industry organisations, and the public.
Drawing on your experience in environmental science, regulatory compliance, or resource management, you will play a vital role in supporting sustainable development and ensuring projects meet legislative requirements. Your analytical skills, and experience in environmental assessment and stakeholder engagement will be key to your success in this role. You will bring to the role your technical expertise in environmental legislation and policy, and your ability to deliver clear, strategic advice, conduct compliance inspections, and mentor junior staff.
Exceptional time‑management skills will ensure that workloads are prioritised according to operational needs. Additionally, your well‑developed communication and interpersonal skills will enhance your ability to facilitate effective communication with stakeholders, fostering collaboration and informed decision‑making across diverse groups.

Eligibility
To be eligible for a permanent appointment, applicants must be an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or have a visa to live and work indefinitely in Australia at the time of application. To work for DMPE, you must consent to a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check and obtain a clearance before you start.

- Bachelor of Science, Environmental Science or Natural Resource Management degree or an approved equivalent scientific degree appropriate for the role.
- Demonstrated knowledge and field experience in environmental management practices including assessment of environmental aspects and risks associated with mining and/or petroleum development activities.
- Demonstrated experience in preparing reports on environmental assessments, investigations and/or analytical research.
