Cambridge University Biomedical Campus (Addenbrooke's Hospital) has an upcoming vacancy for the head of our adult hearing service. For the right individual this is an exciting opportunity for your next career move.
We need an able and experienced audiologist or clinical scientist to develop this service to maintain CUH Audiology as a flagship service. You will be organised and efficient and have a track record of service developments and promoting service oriented‑research. You will have extensive clinical experience with good knowledge of the underlying evidence. You will be experienced in promoting good practice within your service and beyond.
In this role, you will be responsible for the clinical outcomes of the adult hearing team and for demonstrating quality and driving service efficiencies.
In addition to leading the adult rehabilitation team, this post requires you to act as deputy for the Head of Service across the wider Audiology team and hence includes significant leadership responsibility. It is expected that you will already have gained some experience in leading a team and be able to demonstrate the necessary skills and attributes. You will be an able communicator both within your team and with other disciplines and professional groups.
We are in IQIPS accredited tertiary service.
You will have at least a BSc or MSc in Audiology or equivalent and will already have gained experience in a clinical setting. RCCP/HPC registration is expected.
Main duties of the job
- Lead all aspects of the adult rehabilitative audiology work of the Department and act as Deputy to the Head of Service.
- Provision of a comprehensive adult rehabilitative audiology service within the context of the wider department.
- Responsibility for all operational planning and clinical outcomes within the adult rehabilitative service.
- Policy decision making and strategic leadership of the adult hearing team.
- Responsibility for all aspects of specialist adult hearing services, including:
- Single-sided deafness clinic
- Severe‑profound hearing loss clinic
- Responsible for quality across the adult rehabilitation team and meeting the requirements for IQIPS accreditation programme.
- Provision of advice on equipment and development.
- Work with and deputise for the Head of Service; lead in all aspects of service management for Audiology in consultation with the Head of Service.
- Service‑orientated research and development.
- Promotion of the Audiology service to related professions and across the East of England region.

Person Specification
Qualifications
- M.Sc. in Audiology or equivalent higher level training
- State registration
- Higher level clinical training eg STP/HTS/STP or equivalent
- Registered Clinical Scientist
Experience
- Extensive previous experience in clinical audiology and expert specialism in adult rehabilitative Audiology underpinned by specialist theoretical knowledge.
- Able to work autonomously with proven clinical ability in all routine aspects of adult rehabilitation and expertise also in:
- Specialist test of hearing function
- Hearing aid provision in patients with complex needs
- Specialised skills in hearing rehabilitation in adults including highly complex cases
- Significant experience in clinical leadership and experience in line management
- Research experience
- Experience in budget management
Skills
- Able to plan and prioritise own administrative workload and complex workload of the adult rehabilitative Audiology service.
- Able to supervise and take responsibility for the work of other clinical scientists and technical staff when they are performing work under the postholder's direction, including CAC and BSc Trainees.
- Ability to make policy decisions for future service provision within the department and take responsibility for implementation.
- Have awareness of financial issues relating to departmental budget.
- Able to act as HoD when necessary.
- To be able to communicate effectively:
- With all patients, particularly those with significant hearing difficulties
- To explain highly complex information about hearing loss and management options
- With other professionals and staff within Clinic 10(ENT) and Audiology
- With other organisations (volunteers, social services, GPs etc)
- With all members of the team in management role including dealing with complex scenarios such as over work performance.
- With finance and hospital managers.
- In delivering specialist scientific and educational talks within and outside the department.
- Able to deal sensitively with patients with distressing medical conditions or those who are emotionally struggling with the implications of their hearing loss.
- Able to deal with aggressive patients.
- Able to create and maintain databases and spreadsheets, and extract information for internal and external use.
- Able to input clinical data and up‑date computer‑held patient records for every patient attendance.
- Have good keyboard skills for report writing and data analysis.
- Able to spend prolonged periods in front of a VDU.
- Good fine motor skills for aural impression taking, ear mould modification and real ear measurement tests.
- Able to safely and appropriately use delicate audiological equipment.
- Able to safely move patients in wheel chairs.
