Council of the City of Sydney, Australia Baringa Partners LLP Full time

Senior Consultant - Senior Manager - Energy Markets

Melbourne, Australia; Sydney, Australia

We set out to build the world’s most trusted consulting firm – creating lasting impact for clients and pioneering a positive, people‑first way of working. We work with everyone from FTSE 100 names to bright new start‑ups, in every sector.

You’ll find us collaborating shoulder‑to‑shoulder with our clients, from the big picture right down to the detail: helping them define their strategy, deliver complex change, spot the right commercial opportunities, manage risk, or bring their purpose and sustainability goals to life. Our clients love how we get to know what makes their organisations tick – slotting seamlessly into their teams and being proudly geeky about solving their challenges.

We have hubs in Europe, the US, Asia and Australia, and we work all around the world – from a wind farm in Wyoming to a boardroom in Berlin. Find us wherever there’s a challenge to be tackled and an impact to be made.

Our leading Market Fundamentals and Transactions practice are looking for experienced Energy Markets Consultants to join the team in Sydney or Melbourne.

Our Energy Market and Analytics practice offers our clients an unparalleled combination of energy market expertise and commercial insight. We are proud to work with the foremost policymakers, regulators, investors, developers, lenders, and energy companies operating globally across the energy supply chain. Led by a Senior Management Team respected as thought leaders within the industry, we help our clients shape, define, and implement change in energy markets.

We advise the organisations at the heart of the energy transition, providing economic, commercial, and strategic consulting to energy companies, financial institutions, governments, and regulators. Examples of our work in Europe and globally include company and asset valuations for mergers and acquisitions, optimising portfolios from fuel contracting to generation dispatch, developing hedging strategies for vertically integrated energy companies, and advising governments on the costs and benefits of different future energy policy options.

What you will be doing

- Undertake and lead the end‑to‑end market modelling process on client projects, from designing modelling inputs to running the models and quality‑checking the results, and then preparing client deliverables to Baringa’s standards of quality and timeliness.

- Produce key metrics of projects’ financial viability, namely prices and revenues, which feed into early‑stage feasibility assessments as well as advanced‑stage assessment such as buy‑ and sell‑side transaction processes.

- Suggest model and process enhancements in the spirit of continuous improvement.

Your skills and experience

- Deep understanding of power markets, with substantial experience of power market analysis, regulations, and market design – ideally gained in the Australian market.

- Analytical, modelling and data handling skills applied to the wholesale electricity market fundamentals.

- Experience of power market business models across a wide range of asset classes and commercial aspects of energy markets, such as:

- Routes‑to‑market and contractual arrangements

- PPAs

- Trading arrangements

- Experience of the wholesale and ancillary services markets in Australia or elsewhere – along with an understanding of business models for flexible power market assets such as battery storage, and of the market rules and regulations that apply to these assets.

- Ability to take ownership and deliver results in challenging, client‑facing environments.

- Excellent communication and presentation skills and a track record of effective team working.
