EDF Power Solutions Australia Pty Ltd is searching for a Design Manager - Hydropower to join their engineering projects team. The position is based in Sydney.
Key tasks and responsibilities:
- Lead and contribute to the hydropower engineering design workstream of Pumped Hydropower Energy Storage (PHES) projects, ensuring continual effective coordination between workstreams.
- Determine and propose to the Steering Committee the most appropriate and relevant engineering, procurement and construction strategies, and technical subcontracting activities, and manage and implement approved strategies.
- Determine high-level technical aspects of PHES projects in collaboration with Project Director and engineering teams.
- Monitor and assess project budgets, schedule, resources, and quality and alert Project Director to potential issues.
- Technical and design engineering management for PHES projects, i.e. responsible for technical choices and engineering design and ensuring that project design complies with the relevant strategic choices of project owners.
- Responsible for managing design compliance with the project's functional requirements, project standards and design criteria, site data, ESIA, and industry standards (e.g. ICOLD recommendations).
- Ensure best-practice engineering and EDF design requirements are implemented based on interpretation of feasibilities study, design works and investigation surveys, and technical specifications, as well as relevant laws, regulations and local safety standards.
- Manage risk and technical analyses, including determining and implementing associated risk mitigation strategies.
- Determine the expertise required to ensure the quality of technical studies, and request expert input to support/challenge technical decisions as required and coordinate the work of the engineering experts contributing.
- Validate the Terms of Reference for any technical work required for the project's relevant studies and investigations; and negotiate technical contracts and monitor the technical sub-projects of design contractors or investigation subcontractors.
- Ensure that engineering aspects of a project's technical studies and technical specifications are delivered according to agreed scope, time, cost and quality in context of overall project priorities.
- Manage engineering design delivery partners, external engineering contractors, and manager the relationship between external and internal providers and stakeholders.
- Ensure technical options and recommendations are being actively assessed and monitored to maximise the value for the project and minimise technical risks.
- Ensure the quality and consistency of engineering input data for studies, including geology, hydraulics, topography, and seismicity.
- Manage interfaces between the various technical work packages involved in projects including CW, EM, HM, SCADA, Lines and Substations, and E&S.
- Actively assist with the management of internal and external stakeholders relevant to the delivery of projects including presenting to relevant stakeholders as part of opportunity development and advocacy for the projects.
- Design engineering and project reporting as requested by the Project Director.
- Represent EDF in technical internal or external seminars.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent in engineering
Skills and Experience:
- At least 10 years' experience in engineering roles in the hydropower energy industry, particularly in roles with operational, engineering and/or project development including at least 5 years' experience in design engineering roles.
- At least 2 years' experience in a project design management role.
- Strong business acumen with an ability to work with multidisciplinary project teams to assess the value, risks and returns of an opportunity, and maximise return within acceptable risk profiles.
- Professional and thorough approach to greenfield project development with a strong understanding of technical deliverables.
- Track record and technical experience of developing and delivering large scale projects up to completion.
- Strong team approach and demonstrated ability to work in cross-functional teams in multicultural context.
- Ability to analyse complex issues in relation to hydropower development.
- Understanding of risk management and capable of identifying and analysing risk and opportunity implications.
- High degree of interpersonal skills and demonstrable relationship development and management track record.
- Demonstrated exceptional teamwork abilities.
- Experience in performance reporting across a range of deliverables.
- Good knowledge of CIH internal design rules and EDF international project experiences.
