AXA XL is looking for an experienced underwriter to take a prominent role in growing our Construction portfolio in Australia.

The role will include underwriting of large and complex projects. The right candidate will be able to draw upon a solid background of technical underwriting in engineering, renewables, power, oil and gas, or a similarly complex line of business.

You will have the support of highly qualified and experienced risk engineers in the underwriting process and actuaries to help you quantify and price these risks.

You will be working alongside an established team of Energy and Construction underwriters, who enjoy what they do a great deal, are able to have fun, believe that creativity exists in underwriting, and most of all love a sense of belonging to a team.

It will be important to be visible and approachable to brokers and clients alike. Effective verbal and written communication skills, along with collaborative behavior will be essential to the role.

This is a regulated role under the Central Bank of Ireland’s Fitness and Probity regime.

Essential Responsibilities

1. Underwrite, manage and service a renewal book and produce new business in accordance with business unit goals.
2. Negotiate with producers within the limits of your delegated authority and in accordance with established underwriting standards.
3. Underwriting within Group rules and guidelines.
4. Effective engagement with brokers, ensuring relationship growth and a good flow of new business.
5. Upholding and enhancing AXA XL’s brand in the market.
6. Accountability for underwriting results of the construction book; contributing to overall strategy and financial planning.
7. Collaborating with colleagues from wider AXA XL, cross-selling with other products where appropriate.

This position will report to the Underwriting Manager, Energy and Construction for Australia.

Required Skills and Abilities

1. Bachelor’s degree preferred with equivalent (3-4+ years) experience in Construction underwriting.
2. A technical underwriting background in Construction line of business (Energy underwriting experience will also be considered) with a demonstrable background in writing large complex corporate risks.
3. Analytical Skills - Visualize, gather information, articulate, analyze and solve complex problems.
4. Industry Knowledge - Understanding of the insurance industry and specific product portfolios to positively impact the underwriting business.
5. Ability to respond to a changing market environment with flexibility and innovation.
6. Ability to work independently.
7. Excellent interpersonal skills and collegiate behavior.
8. Commercially astute and able to contribute to growth and development of the construction portfolio.
