The Role

As an Economic Modeller, you will support the design, delivery, and ongoing enhancement of the Victorian Skills Authority's (VSA) core economic models. These models underpin workforce planning and training provisioning decisions across the Victorian government.

In this role, you will work collaboratively with a team of economic modellers and analysts to deliver the VSA's economic models, working closely with government stakeholders to integrate modelling outputs into critical decision-making processes. You will support the delivery of timely, accurate and high-quality data analysis that provide actionable insights into current and future skills needs across Victorian industries, occupations and regions.

To be successful, you will have experience working with economic models and coding, proven ability to conduct high-quality research to inform analytical methodologies, deliver high quality analysis, and communicate complex insights clearly. You will also have experience working collaboratively with diverse stakeholders to achieve shared outcomes.

Key accountabilities include

- Support the development, refinement and maintenance of key economic models and analytical products, providing expertise to refine and enhance existing models and analytical approaches.

- Apply a sound economic framework and advanced analytical tools (R/Python) to analyse and report on labour market, training system and skills data.

- Contribute to the delivery of analysis and reporting products that communicate insights about current and future skills requirements, ensuring content is concise, well-structured, and tailored to the needs of diverse audiences.

- Apply research and analysis methods to support decision making on economic modelling or analytical approaches.

- Contribute to a culture of innovation and continuous improvement in economic modelling and analytical approaches by sharing expertise, working collaboratively and mentoring more junior staff to enhance their analytical skills.

- Prepare concise, timely and relevant reports, briefings, and correspondence to cater to various audiences.

- Build and maintain positive relationships with peers and key stakeholders, and convey information clearly and accurately, in a professional, sensitive and respectful manner.

The Team

The position of Economic Modeller will work within Analysis and Insights Branch, which sits within Victorian Skills Authority group.

The Victorian Skills Authority (VSA) provides evidence-based planning and solutions to meet current and future skills needs in Victoria. We are an administrative office led by a chief executive officer and supported by an advisory board of key stakeholders.

We report directly to the Minister for Skills and TAFE and work closely with the Department of Jobs, Skills, Industries and Regions (DJSIR).

Our role is to gather and analyse a range of quantitative and qualitative data, identify where there are current and emerging skills shortages in Victoria's workforce and work with stakeholders to develop strategies to fill these gaps.

The VSA has 4 branches – Engagement and Skills Reform Branch, Services Branch, Analysis and Insights Branch and Executive and Corporate Services Branch.

About You

To be successful in this role you will have the following skills and experience:

- Specialist Expertise in Research, Analysis & Evaluation: Experience working with economic models and applying economic concepts. Proficiency in analytical applications (R required, SQL, Python, Power Bi would be desirable). Proven ability to identify improvements to economic models and analytical products.

- Conceptual and Analytical Ability: Demonstrated experience in analysing large complex datasets and presenting key insights, using a sound economic framework. Proven ability to apply conceptual and analytical skills to reason through problems. Can draw on a range of information sources to identify opportunities for innovation or improvement.

- Research: Demonstrated ability to conduct high-quality research to inform economic modelling and analytical methodologies. Proven capacity to critically evaluate and synthesise a wide variety of information sources to support the use of best practise modelling approaches and analytical frameworks. Ability to translate research findings into clear, evidence-based recommendations for practical application.

- Written Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication skills, ensuring communication contain necessary information to achieve their purpose. Can prepare analytical reports, presentations, discussion papers and briefs using clear, concise, and grammatically correct language. Conveys ideas, information and insights clearly, effectively tailoring communications and contents to suit the target audience.

- Stakeholder Management: Engages effectively with a wide variety of stakeholders, building and maintaining strong relationships. Builds trust, forges mutually beneficial partnerships and effectively manages stakeholder expectations.
