The Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) is the leading advocate for surgical standards, professionalism and surgical education in Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand. The College is a not-for-profit organisation that represents more than 8600 surgeons and 1300 surgical trainees and Specialist International Medical Graduates.

RACS also supports healthcare and surgical education in the Asia-Pacific region and is a substantial funder of surgical research. There are nine surgical specialties in Australasia being: Cardiothoracic Surgery, General Surgery, Neurosurgery, Orthopaedic Surgery, Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery, Paediatric Surgery, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Urology and Vascular Surgery.

About the role

You will be responsible for driving financial management and analysis related to government grants and commercial contracts. You will work closely with business leaders to ensure effective cost management, assist in the budgeting and forecasting process, and provide strategic financial advice and insights to support the organization's growth and financial sustainability.

Responsibilities

- Business Partnering – Grants and Commercial Contracts: Develop and maintain a comprehensive costing model to capture all direct and indirect costs for service delivery and programs, particularly for government grants and commercial contracts.
- Refine the expense allocation process, collaborating with business leaders to enhance accuracy and transparency.
- Partner with business units to track project performance and ensure projects are up to date with variations or changes in estimation.
- Collaborate with business units and program managers to cost new services and programs.
- Work with procurement to analyze key expenditure areas and optimize financial performance.
- Support the monitoring and management of FTE and salary expenses with Business Unit Managers and People & Culture.

- Business Partnering – Financial Support: Provide coaching to business units, helping them develop a commercial mindset for operational and strategic decision-making.
- Lead financial discussions to support business planning, ensuring accountability and alignment with key deliverables.
- Offer timely, actionable insights to business leaders, identifying opportunities and risks for achieving financial targets.
- Offer strategic financial guidance to executives and business managers, including advising on business initiatives to achieve key objectives.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance financial processes and reporting tools.
- Support commercial growth opportunities and business case assessments to contribute to the Strategic Budget.
- Lead special projects and ad-hoc financial reporting as required.

- Budgeting, Forecasting, Analysis, and Reporting: Prepare and present monthly board analysis, providing insights on financial performance and progress towards goals.
- Support the development and implementation of a long-term strategic planning process, including the creation of a 3-year Strategic Budget.
- Coordinate the Annual Budget program, offering training, resources, and support to business units for budget preparation.
- Collaborate with business units to prepare accurate cost and revenue forecasts, providing insights on financial performance against budgets.
- Analyze and comment on month-to-date progress for monthly reporting.

- Month-End Tasks: Prepare month-end journals and support the month-end close process.
- Work with People & Culture and the wider finance team to track staff movements and ensure accurate financial reporting.

Skills and Experience

- Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, Commerce, or a related field.
- CA/CPA qualifications are essential.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Word.
- Strong business acumen with proven experience in commercial and financial decision-making.
- Exceptional communication skills, with the ability to explain complex financial concepts to non-financial stakeholders.
- Experience with ERP/CRM systems (e.g., iMIS, Microsoft Dynamics, Adaptive Planning) is desirable.
