Veterinary Nurse - Permanent Fulltime (Burwood East)

About the role

We are currently looking for full-time nurses to join us. We are a large clinic with a rotating staff of approximately 50 nurses and 25 vets, including veterinarians with advanced education in internal medicine, orthopaedics, shelter medicine, soft tissue surgery, ophthalmology and emergency and critical care. Our facility includes five operating theatres, eight consulting rooms, four shelter hospital wards, two private patient hospital wards, a cat-specific isolation ward, digital x-ray capability as well as dental x-ray, in-house pathology capability, ultrasound capability and ECG.

This role will provide you with:

- Exposure to a wide range of routine and non-routine surgical procedures.
- Exposure to a wide case load of hospitalised patients including management of ophthalmic procedures post op, orthopaedic procedures post-op, various zoonotic and infectious disease management, exotic medicine, wound management, and medicine cases.
- Opportunity to advocate for preventative care through nurse consults providing the community with animal care information on husbandry, nutrition, parasite control and pet behaviour.

Responsibilities

- Working a rotating roster with no on-call or after-hours care.
- Collaborating with vets, nurses, animal attendants, behaviour teams, customer service officers and foster coordinators to achieve the best outcomes.
- Rotating shifts across areas each day, including wards, theatre, reception/consulting, and support roles with a caseload that can extend to over 40.
- Providing high level customer service (verbal and written).
- Inpatient care: TPR, walking, feeding, cleaning and administration of prescribed medications.
- Communicating treatment plans and liaising with Foster, Adoptions, and Shelter teams.
- Wound management; IV catheter placement and management of IV fluids and CRI’s.
- Admission and discharge of hospitalised and surgery patients, triage of emergencies, and grief support.
- Surgical nursing: post-op instructions and patient recovery communication.
- Sterilization and preparation of instruments.
- In-house pathology equipment use and pathology collection (including blood collection).
- Safe animal handling.

Qualifications and experience

- Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing.
- Evidence of current tetanus vaccination required.
- Willingness to perform a National Police Check.

- Well-developed veterinary nursing knowledge and skills.
- Experience in veterinary nursing with knowledge of anatomy, behaviour, disease recognition and safe handling.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with compassion for animals.
- Experience working collaboratively in a team.
- Ability and commitment to work on a rotating roster, including some weekends and public holidays.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; strong problem solving and organisational skills.
