The Two-way Science Initiative is an approach to teaching and learning that connects the Western Australian Science Curriculum to Aboriginal knowledges. This program supports schools to build partnerships with Aboriginal communities to develop integrated culturally responsive learning programs that connect the Western Australian Science Curriculum to Aboriginal knowledges. The foundation of a Two-way Science learning program is cultural and ecological knowledge taught by local Aboriginal people to students on-country and in the classroom across the Kimberley region.

The Principal Consultant Two-way Science will be responsible for the ongoing development implementation of the Department’s Two-way Science Initiative. Supporting schools to build positive relationships with parents/carers and local Aboriginal communities in order to develop place-based culturally responsive teaching and learning programs for primary and secondary school students is central to the role.

The Role

This role requires cultural organisational knowledge in planning and coordinating activities with Ranger Groups, community groups and school curriculum teams in developing school based Two-way Science programs. You will also be responsible for identifying and addressing challenges in the initiative’s delivery, providing expert advice and guidance, and overseeing risk management to ensure safe and effective implementation of the program.

A deep understanding of Kimberley Aboriginal communities and the ability to build effective working relationships with Aboriginal school communities and other key stakeholders is an essential requirement. You will be required to work in partnership with curriculum team members within the Kimberley Regional Education Office and Statewide Services to deliver professional learning in collaboration with local and regional Aboriginal organisations in order to support schools in embedding culturally responsive practices and contribute to the development of learning programs.

The position is attached to the Kimberley Education Regional Office in Broome (6725). Flexibility in the workplace location of the successful applicant may be negotiated with the Regional Executive Director.

Minimum Requirements

1. be an Australian or New Zealand citizen, permanent resident or have a valid visa with relevant work rights for the term of the appointment.
2. consent to a National Criminal History Check with the Department's Screening Unit.
3. hold and maintain a current ‘C’ or ‘C.A.’ class drivers’ licence.
4. undertake travel throughout the state, including overnight stays in non-metropolitan locations and travelling in small aeroplanes to remote locations as required.
5. obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check.
