A little bit about us

Territories Division administers essential infrastructure and services to territories including residents of Norfolk Island, Christmas Island, the Cocos (Keeling) Islands and the Jervis Bay Territory. We administer the Ashmore and Cartier Islands and the Coral Sea Islands territories, and manage national interests in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) and Northern Territory (NT).

The Indian Ocean Territories Branch delivers policy advice, infrastructure, state-type services and the legal framework to the communities of Christmas Island and the Cocos (Keeling) Islands. The Indian Ocean Territories Policy team undertakes research and analysis of key policy issues in the territories of Christmas Island and the Cocos (Keeling) Islands. We develop options and recommendations that represent the Australian Government’s interests and support local communities. We work on policy issues including economic and environmental sustainability, crown land management, regulatory and governance frameworks, infrastructure investment, community development, service delivery and operational matters.

The Mainland Territories Branch is responsible for service delivery, policy development, delivery of major capital works and complex procurements, work health and safety, effective governance and legal reform. Approximately 92 percent of the Jervis Bay Territory is owned by the Wreck Bay Aboriginal community, including the Booderee National Park.

The opportunity we have available

The Indian Ocean Territories Policy Section and Mainland Territories Policy Section have a number of positions available for immediate filling and will use this process to establish a merit list. Tasks to be undertaken will have a strong policy focus. This will include:

- Indian Ocean Territories Policy (Canberra based)_
- Assisting with the research, development, and drafting of options to support economic, social and environmental sustainability in the Indian Ocean Territories;
- Assist with drafting replies to correspondence, policy queries and ministerial briefs;
- Assist with the preparation of background papers on issues, as they arise;
- Discuss complex policy issues within the team environment;
- Where required, assist with the secretariat function of any meetings requiring Departmental representation;
- Support the procurement and contract management of consultancies; and
- Liaise with various stakeholders and support the team’s engagement with a variety of government agencies.
- ACT/NT and National Redress Scheme Policy Officer (Canberra based)_

You will be involved in a range of work, with a focus on National Redress Scheme, ACT and NT matters:

- Assisting the provision of strategic policy advice to Government on self-governing territory matters in the ACT and NT;
- Preparing briefings, correspondence and other papers for the Senior Executive and Ministers, including to support Senior Executives delivering written and face-to-face apologies under the National Redress Scheme. A significant number of survivors are First Nations people;
