Adelaide Region SA, Australia Australian Wildlife Conservancy Full time

**Introduction**:
Australian Wildlife Conservancy (AWC) is the largest private (non-profit) owner of land for conservation in Australia. We deliver effective conservation on AWC wildlife sanctuaries and properties managed in partnership or under contract with other organisations (currently 6.6 M ha), and we influence conservation outcomes over a broader area through other partnership arrangements (currently 6.1 M ha of pastoral land). With a focus on practical land management, informed by world-class science, AWC is implementing a dynamic new model for conservation.

**Description**:
Yookamurra Wildlife Sanctuary is located in the Mid-Murray region of South Australia. Yookamurra is one of Australia’s longest-running ‘safe havens’, with a 1,100 ha fenced feral predator-free area supporting a number of reintroduced threatened mammal species: the Numbat, Greater Bilby, Burrowing Bettong and Brush-tailed Bettong. In total, the property protects over 5,000 ha of habitat including regionally rare old-growth mallee. AWC operations and science staff work together to implement conservation actions on Yookamurra, including feral animal, weed and fire management, and a monitoring and research program. In addition, Yookamurra also hosts AWC’s major on-site school education program. This program, located inside the fenced area, provides students a unique and engaging environmental learning experience through day trips or overnight camps which consist of guided science-based projects and activities that are strongly linked to the SA school curriculum.

AWC is seeking an enthusiastic and motivated Wildlife Educator to deliver our long-standing education program at Yookamurra. The Wildlife Educator will be the key contact for schools and teachers participating in the program, and will deliver a range of high quality and engaging presentations, guided walks (diurnal and nocturnal), and science-based projects to primary and high school students when they visit Yookamurra.

In 2023, the education program on Yookamurra will run from April-October. The number of school visits is dependent on interest (from schools) and availability (from AWC’s end); typically, around a dozen visits may be hosted a year, more if availability allows. Currently, the program offers overnight and day trip options. The Wildlife Educator’s role is to liaise with schools about visits and then, once a visit is arranged: to be on-site the day before a school group is booked to arrive, to prepare the equipment and materials required for the visit (e.g. charging spotlights), to clean and replenish supplies in the education centre and kitchen area, remove any trip hazards from village area and walking trails (e.g. large sticks), clean amenities block, and accommodation (if being used); to run the program for the duration of the visit; and to pack up materials, clean the education centre and kitchen, amenities block, accommodation (if used), empty rubbish/ recycling and complete any laundry after the school group has left. As a rule, approximately 30 hours/ week is required to deliver school visits at Yookamurra. Arrival and departure times may be different for each group, so some flexibility in hours will be required.
Outside of school visits, the Wildlife Educator would be expected to work from home, initially familiarising themselves with AWC’s mission, history and, in particular, the ecology and management of Yookamurra; completing inductions on AWC’s internal processes (safety, procurement, etc); planning for upcoming school visits; collating data and feedback for reporting; contributing to Yookamurra’s ‘Stories from the Field’ and potentially delivering other environmental outreach such as open days at Yookamurra, and visits to schools and community groups. Opportunities may also be available for professional development. It is envisaged the total time commitment for this phase of work would be approximately 15 hours/ week.

Depending on workload during the main part of the program, opportunities for further education outreach, and the availability of funding, the position may continue after October, by negotiation with the incumbent, solely at AWC’s discretion. When staying at Yookamurra, basic single accommodation will be provided in the village with shared bathroom and kitchen/ cooking facilities. Further information can be found on the job description here.

**Key duties of the Wildlife Educator are to**:
**Implement AWC’s education program at Yookamurra, including**:
managing enquiries and bookings and being the key contact for schools and teachers before, during and after school visits.
being on-site at Yookamurra to deliver the education program in the format of day trips or overnight camps, running all activities associated with the program including presentations, guided walks, projects and other activities.
