**About us**

The Coroners Court of Victoria (CCOV) has three functions.

1.** Independently investigating deaths and fires**.

Certain deaths and fires are reported to Coroners for independent investigation. Their investigations seek to establish the facts - when, where, how and why the death or fire happened.

2.** Reducing preventable deaths.**

Wherever possible, the Coroner will suggest ways to prevent similar deaths or fires by making well informed and practical recommendations, based on the evidence before them.

3.** Promoting public health and safety and the administration of justice.**

CCOV regularly reports on data and trends regarding preventable deaths in Victoria to help inform public health responses.

**About the role**

The Coroners Prevention Unit (CPU) is a specialist service for Coroners created to strengthen their prevention role and provide them with expert assistance in their death investigations. CPU staff include clinicians, public health practitioners and data specialists whom Coroners can engage to assist at any point in their investigations.

The Health and Medical Investigation Team (HMIT) within CPU is made up of medical professionals who assist Coroners in their investigations and review clinical evidence to identify contributing factors in complex healthcare-related deaths.

The primary role of the Paediatric Medical Specialist is to:

- Providing expert clinical advice and evidence to Coroners to identify any contributing factors in paediatric and neonatal healthcare related deaths.
- Communicate technical and medical concepts to ensure that such concepts are understood in the context of a coronial investigation and to multiple parties.

**About you**

We are looking for a medical professional with excellent communication skills and a passion to public health and safety.
- Broad experience of the healthcare system, including a strong understanding of clinical practice and clinical governance in Australia and how it is regulated.
- Demonstrated knowledge of how systems of care impact on patient safety.
- Significant experience in general paediatric and neonatal clinical practice.
- Experience in mortality reviews, clinical case reviews, quality control and root cause analysis methodologies.
