The 3D Culture Laboratory (3DC) operates under the Katharina Gaus Light Microscopy Facility (KGLMF). The KGLMF is a multi-user facility residing within the Mark Wainwright Analytical Centre (MWAC) in the Division of Research and Enterprise at UNSW. The facility is a platform for researchers to gain access to a comprehensive suite of advanced microscopy and biological techniques, and associated expertise. The facility supports and collaborates with a variety of research groups in the Faculties of Science, Medicine and Health, and Engineering at UNSW, as well as groups at other universities, health districts and research institutes in Australia and overseas. The 3DC Laboratory is the latest addition to the KGLMF, enabling the support and acceleration of organoid and other 3D culture technologies for research and industry partners.

A Research Officer plays a key role in supporting research projects as part of a multidisciplinary team of researchers preparing and developing 3D culture technologies in a multiuser facility.

The position will provide technical and research assistance to researchers using the facility to design, expand and maintain organoid and 3D cultures for research projects in the fields of disease modelling, drug discovery, and personalized medicine.

The role reports to Manager of the 3D culture facility and has no direct reports.

**Responsibilities**
- Provision of practical and efficient research support to stakeholders, assisting in the conduct of research that utilises adult stem cell or IPSC derived organoids.
- Support in the conceptualisation, design, and successful conduct of projects with organoids.
- Support in generating a bank of characterised organoid lines from biopsies and/or brushings.
- Regular conduct of organoid production, culture, and characterisation (including but not limited to immunohistochemistry, microscopy, and western blotting).
- Positively and proactively contribute to the training of staff and students in organoid methodologies through training courses and workshops.
- Prepare and contribute to the production of technical reports, as well as manuscripts for publication and tenders or grants for external funding.
- Contribute to collaborative and developmental research aimed at improving services, including further optimisation of organoid acquisition and growth protocols, as well as development of protocols for genetic modification
- Monitor research protocols, provide problem solving and resolution to any evolving problems related to design, implementation, and analysis or organoid cultures.

**Skills and Experience**
- A university degree in Science, Medical Sciences or related discipline, or an equivalent level of knowledge gained through a combination of education, training, or experience.
- At least 2 years of experience in maintaining organoid cultures.
- Experience in using and training others in molecular biology techniques and common validation methods of organoids.
- Knowledge of research protocols, experimental design and planning as involved in developing research projects utilising organoids and reporting against milestones.
- Demonstrated superior interpersonal communication skills to initiate and maintain effective stakeholder relationships whilst exercising discretion and confidentiality.
- Excellent time management skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
