Adelaide Region SA, Australia Australian Government - Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water Full time

EL 1 - $115,663 - $124,403 per annum plus superannuation
- Emissions Reduction Division
- Adelaide, SA, Brisbane, QLD, Canberra, ACT, Darwin, NT, Hobart, TAS, Melbourne, VIC, Perth, WA, Sydney, NSW
- _Lead Australia’s engagement in the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change._
- _Work with a motivated and professional team with a wide range of skills and backgrounds._

**Who we are**
The Emissions Reduction Division develops and implements Australia’s domestic climate mitigation policies and programs, including medium and long-term greenhouse gas emissions reduction policies and targets. It is also responsible for reducing emissions in the transport sector, and emissions reporting and projections.

You will be working in the National Inventory Systems and International Reporting (NISIR) Branch. This Branch delivers the National Greenhouse Accounts, which provide information on Australia’s historical, and projected greenhouse gas emissions. This data is critical to Australia’s response to climate change, informing the design and tracking the effectiveness of domestic climate action and progress towards emissions reduction targets, fulfilling Australia’s international emissions reporting obligations and informing future emissions reductions targets.

The Branch also leads Australia’s engagement in the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). This United Nations body is the world’s leading authority on climate change knowledge, it prepares assessment reports on climate change science, adaptation and mitigation, and develops guidance for the preparation of national greenhouse gas inventories.

The role sits within the Inventory, Reporting and Engagement Team, which is a fast-paced, multi-disciplinary environment responsible for a range of data, policy, advocacy and capacity building deliverables to support Australia’s domestic emissions reduction measures, implement its UNFCCC and Paris Agreement emission reporting obligations, represent Australia in the IPCC and build other countries’ capability to implement their international emissions reporting obligations and contribute to global climate action.

Australia’s engagement in the IPCC aims to ensure that the latest scientific, technical and socio-economic knowledge relevant to the development of Australia's climate change policy is incorporated into IPCC reports. We engage with the Australian research community, Commonwealth, State and Territory departments, Indigenous scholars and Pacific Nations about opportunities to contribute to IPCC processes.

We work with international counterparts to support the IPCC’s delivery of policy-relevant reports that include information relevant to our region and uphold the IPCC’s reputation as the world’s leading authority on climate change and a trusted source of technical advice for governments around the world. In so doing we support Australia’s international standing as a positive contributor to the IPCC and global climate action.

**The Job**
We are looking for a dynamic highly motivated Assistant Director who will, as part of a small multi-disciplinary team:

- Lead strategic design and delivery of Australia’s IPCC engagement responsibilities including measures to enhance Indigenous and Pacific nations engagement in the IPCC.
- Lead the Department’s engagement with research institutions, Commonwealth, State and Territory Departments and other experts in the development of IPCC products.
- Represent Australia in Plenary meetings and in multilateral discussions with other governments and stakeholders on IPCC matters.
- Provide expert advice and briefing on IPCC processes and findings and enhance understanding of IPCC reports within DCCEEW and other government bodies.
- Lead financial management of the IPCC budget including the IPCC expert grants program, procurement activities and other financial arrangements.
- Support the work of the Branch to enable the Department to make evidence-based decisions and support the domestic and international reporting responsibilities.
- Manage a program officer to support the delivery of the IPCC work program.
- Lead Australia’s engagement in the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.
- Work with a motivated and professional team with a wide range of skills and backgrounds.

**What we are looking for**

**Skills and capabilities**
- Strong organisational and problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills and a demonstrated ability to clearly convey an idea or concept to different audiences.
- Proven ability to build positive working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
- Demonstrated ability to be self-motivated, prioritise and meet competing deadlines in a high paced environment with short and long-term priorities.

**Knowledge and experience**
