**About Us**

The South Australian Commissioner for Aboriginal Children and Young People (CACYP) is an independent statutory authority established under the Children and Young People (Oversight and Advocacy Bodies) Act 2016 (“the Act”).

The Aboriginal Commissioner promotes and advocates for the rights, development and wellbeing of Aboriginal children and young people in South Australia, particularly those who are vulnerable and at-risk.

The Act sets out the Aboriginal Commissioner’s role including advocating and promoting Aboriginal children and young people’s participation in the making of decisions that affect their lives. The Act specifically requires the Aboriginal Commissioner to advise and make recommendations to Ministers, State authorities and other bodies (including non Government bodies), undertake and commission research, and prepare and publish reports on matters related to the rights, development and wellbeing of South Australia’s Aboriginal children and young people at the systemic level.

The Commissioner for Aboriginal Children and Young People is to engage widely with Aboriginal communities and groups, government agencies and critical stakeholders to identify emerging issues impacting on Aboriginal children and young people.

The Commissioner for Aboriginal Children and Young People works collegiately with the Commissioner for Children and Young People and the Guardian for Children and Young People on the inclusion of Aboriginal children and young people needs and priorities when promoting and advocating for the rights and interests of all children and young people in South Australia and on targeted approaches to promoting the participation of Aboriginal children and young people in the making of decisions that affect their lives.

**About the Role**

The role involves advocating on behalf of vulnerable Aboriginal children and young people by negotiating, developing, and providing expert advice and opinions on fair and effective social policy from an Aboriginal child and young person’s perspective; inclusive of the Aboriginal family, community and cultural context. Additionally, the role includes coordinating and disseminating information to the public to raise awareness of issues and strategies to address them. Responsibilities also include drafting responses and submissions to major inquiries, proposed legislative changes, and other political, welfare, educational, or industrial developments.
