Research Officer (Biomedical Image Analysis): Bahlo Lab
**Job Description**:
- An exciting opportunity is available for a Research Officer to join the Bahlo Statistical Genetics Research Laboratory in the Population Health and Immunity Division at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research.
About the Position
The position will utilise large-scale MRI and DEXA image datasets (tens of thousands of images) to perform image segmentation to derive novel features which will be used as input for genetic analyses to determine genetic drivers of vertebral development.
- About the lab
- The Bahlo lab is a computational biology lab that uses statistical and computational methods to gain insights into the genetic drivers of traits, including disease. As a highly collaborative lab the team work closely with molecular biologists and clinicians. The lab has access to several large national and international disease cohorts, primarily in neurological and retinal disorders, and performs analyses of diverse datatypes in conjunction with genetic data, in which the lab is expert. The lab has a strong genetic discovery track record which it now wishes to extend to also encompass image analysis.
Selection Criteria
Experience and qualifications:
- A PhD in image analysis-
- A keen interest in genetics (training will be provided on the job and genetic work will be supported or performed by other team members with genetics expertise)-
- A strong interest in discovery science- Knowledge and skills required:- Strong programming skills-
- Strong data management skills-
- Experience with high performance computingDesirable Knowledge and Skills:
- Experience with cloud computePersonal Qualities:
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to work constructively within a team environment Excellent attention to detail, ensuring that data and methods are reproducible and communicated clearly to others-
- Ability to manage time effectively and be reliable and approachable-
- Willing to take direction and have progress reviewed where requiredTerms of Appointment
- This position is available for 2 years in a full-time capacity but part-time (>0.6EFT) will be considered based on the applicant. Salary is at Academic Level A6 - A8 (AUD $93,415 - $100,270 dependent on experience. Up to 17% superannuation and very attractive salary packaging options are available. For female applicants with children further financial support for childcare is also available as is on-site childcare. The WEHI, including the Bahlo lab, has a strong focus on supporting a diverse workforce.
