**The Opportunity**:
- The Department of Parliamentary Services (DPS) is recruiting for a PSL6 Legal Officer within our Corporate Operations Branch.
- The Corporate Operations Branch has transformed our organisational model to enable the delivery of strategic, client-focused and innovative services to the department. We provide a range of services including human resources, legal, work health and safety, performance and conduct, audit and fraud.
- The role forms part of a section comprising of legal, conduct and performance functions including the management of bullying, harassment and discrimination matters. This is an exciting opportunity to join a successful team of legal and HR professionals working in sync with the department's direction and strategic priorities.
- The Legal function for the department is responsible for:
- Providing expertise, advice and direction on all legal matters including:
- Employment law
- General administrative law
- Intellectual property
- Information access
- Statutory interpretation
- Parliamentary law
- Drafting of instruments and documentation.
- Commissioning, overseeing and reviewing external legal advice, consistent with the needs of the department
- Promoting and managing relationships and key strategic alliances
- Delivering education, training and promoting a safe and inclusive workplace
- The provision of professional and timely responses to all legal and conduct issues.

**Who we are looking for**
Demonstrated ability to provide high-quality legal advice in a complex and sensitive environment with a strong focus on client service.
- Extensive knowledge of public administration with an understanding of human resource and governance practices.
- Excellent people and negotiation skills, highly developed communication skills and the ability to work collegiately with a broad range of stakeholders from government, industry and the wider community.
- Extensive knowledge of and compliance with legislative frameworks, government decision making and agency guidelines and regulations.
- The ability to solve complex problems and manage complex issues for internal and external clients.
- A high level of integrity, discretion and a willingness to lead by example.
**Job Specific Requirements**:
- The successful applicant will be required to:
- obtain and maintain a Baseline Vetting (Protected/Restricted) security clearance
- be admitted, or eligible to be admitted, as a legal practitioner of the High Court of Australia or a Supreme Court of a State or Territory
- hold, or be eligible to obtain, a restricted government practicing certificate in the ACT.

- Under limited direction undertake duties in accordance with the agreed standards for a Parliamentary Level 6 classification. The duties will include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Assist with the Legal function for the department, providing expertise, advice and direction in all legal matters to ensure:
- policies, procedures and processes are in line with legislation and best practice
- the implementation of relevant recommendations from internal and external reviews are prioritised
- productive working relationships are developed and maintained with all employees
- a strong focus on education and training and the promotion and support of a safe and inclusive workplace, and
- the provision of professional and timely responses to all legal and conduct issues.
- Contribute to a team of legal and HR professionals that work in sync with the department's direction and strategic priorities.
- Ensure compliance with the Legal Service Directions and consistency of advice provided to clients, including: areas to provide in-house legal services that meet the department's strategic objectives, including:
- employment law
- general administrative law
- intellectual property
- information access
- statutory interpretation
- parliamentary law
- drafting of instruments and documentation
- Assist with the commissioning, overseeing and reviewing external legal advice, consistent with the needs of the Department.
