**Fixed term position for 3 years for a Postdoctoral Fellow in Vascular Physiology & Reproduction.**

This position is a new appointment in the “Vascular Physiology & Reproduction” research group, in the School of Biological Sciences (Faculty of Sciences, Engineering and Technology) and Robinson Research Institute, and will involve a major collaboration with researchers in the Adelaide Medical School (Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology). The postdoctoral fellow will be expected to take a lead role in an NHMRC-funded project to investigate novel treatments for preeclampsia in pregnancy. The successful applicant will also be encouraged and mentored to develop an independent research career in the biomedical sciences.

Our research group studies the mechanisms underlying vascular dysfunction which lead to pregnancy complications such as preeclampsia. This project will investigate how maternal arterial vasodilation is compromised in animal models of preeclampsia and if a novel selenium derivative can be used to treat endothelial dysfunction in animals with preeclampsia-like characteristics. We use pressure and wire myography, vascular ultrasound, contemporary molecular biology techniques and protein analysis to assess the vascular responses to relaxin and the cellular mechanisms underpinning these responses.

**Key Responsibilities**
- Establish and perform wire and/or pressure myography experiments with rodent and human resistance arteries.
- Analyse gene and protein expression in blood vessels.
- Learn vascular ultrasound techniques as required.
- Contribute to the development of ideas and techniques in the laboratory and the research group, as evidenced through communication with group members, active participation in regular group meetings and coordination of research activities between collaborators.
- Undertake some undergraduate teaching in biochemistry, cell biology or reproductive biology in the School of Biological Sciences.
- Provide technical assistance and academic guidance to Honours and PhD students in the group.
- Establish an active network of internal and external contacts related to the field of vascular physiology

Please note that due to the nature of the work, some experiments will needs to be conducted after hours and that the handling of both animal and human tissues will be required.

**To be successful you will need**:

- Completed PhD or equivalent in biomedical sciences or related discipline.
- Ability to carry out high quality basic research in vascular physiology.
- Demonstrated experience in small vessel wire or pressure myography, and fine dissection of small resistance blood vessels.
- Evidence of original publications as a lead author.
- Ability to conduct research under limited supervision, including oversight of day-to-day laboratory operations.
