The Department of Environment and Science is seeking to appoint an experienced and passionate manager to provide leadership and direction to a multi-disciplinary team to deliver priority programs to support conservation of koalas in Queensland.
The successful applicant will provide strategic direction and management oversight to the Koala Conservation Programs team and its programs, high level advice and support to the Director Southern Wildlife and Koala Operations and be responsible for ensuring key projects and initiatives are delivered according to priorities, timelines, and targets. They will promote awareness, appreciation and understanding of the status and conservation of koalas in Queensland and build effective sustainable partnerships with First Nations peoples, wildlife and conservation groups, industry groups, local councils, and the community to support conservation and recovery of koala populations.
To achieve the outcomes required by the role, you must be able to: - Lead and manage the Koala Conservation Programs team to deliver programs contributing to the conservation and recovery of koala populations in Queensland;
- Facilitate the delivery of a coordinated, collaborative approach to habitat protection, restoration and threat mitigation through partnerships with key stake and rights holders;
- Identify emerging issues and challenges in the policy, legislative and operational aspects of koala conservation and contribute to setting, planning and leading the strategic and tactical directions
- Lead the development, implementation and evaluation of major and innovative policy and operational initiatives and projects for the efficient delivery of koala conservation programs;
- Provide high-level policy, legislative and operational advice on issues, programs and functions, including the preparation of high-level submissions and briefings;
- Engage and negotiate with a range of stakeholders and partners to facilitate legislative and policy outcomes, achieve performance targets and establish partnership arrangements;
- Develop and maintain effective strategic networks and represent the department on high level working groups and committees regarding koala conservation issues;
- Foster a workplace culture that supports and promotes the interests of First Nations people and contributes to better outcomes for First Nations people.
- A thorough knowledge of best practice wildlife and conservation management principles, practices and legislation;
- The ability to develop strategic and operational policy and to research and analyse issues to develop best practice options and solutions;
- Superior communication and negotiation skills, including the ability to provide clear advice on complex or controversial issues;
- Skills in building and sustaining networks and relationships with key partners and stakeholders;
- The ability to contribute to enriching our culture of safety, innovation, respect and inclusion.
The position location is flexible within the role's area of operation however travel to other locations across Queensland may be required from time to time, including overnight stays.
