About the Business Unit
CAV Legal sits within The Office of the General Counsel (OGC). The OGC is responsible for the provision of in-house legal services across the Department of Justice and Community Safety, to the Attorney-General as First Law Officer, and to other DJCS Ministers.
Consumer Affairs Victoria (CAV) is Victoria's consumer regulator. Our vision is a fair and competitive marketplace in Victoria. We:

**Regulatory Services includes the following**:

- Information and Analysis - provides strategic and operational intelligence and analysis to the organisation, and manages CAV's compliance data and other information.

About the Role
Solicitors within the CAV Legal team provide legal support across CAV, but primarily to the Regulatory Services. That support is provided through the provision of specialist legal advice to investigators prior to and during the course of investigations, preparation of legal briefs and materials to assist in the successful prosecution of defendants and by appearing and conducting litigation in all jurisdictions, including the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal, Magistrate's Court of Victoria, County Court of Victoria and the Supreme Court of Victoria as well as the Federal Court of Australia.

**Some of your duties may include**:

- Assist CAV Legal with the provision of legal services to Regulatory Services, in all aspects of the cases handled within the branch.
- Undertake high level legal research and provide legal advice in consumer law and industries regulated by the Director of Consumer Affairs Victoria and undertaking casework in matters, including the briefing of counsel if required.
- Assist in the development of strategies and develop policy options for the management of consumer law matters and emerging issues.

About You
- Good knowledge and understanding of the practice and procedure of various courts including the processes and rules of Court applicable to proceedings commenced by writ or originating motion or criminal prosecutions.
- Demonstrated ability to assist with and/or manage litigation and conduct criminal, civil and administrative proceedings, including the management of budgets.
- Demonstrated ability to carry out complex legal research and analysis.
- Proven ability to provide oral and written advice, which is authoritative, accurate and clear, on complex matters relevant to consumer law or the legislation administered by the Director of Consumer Affairs Victoria.
- Capability and willingness to develop positive relationships and work collaboratively with stakeholders, including across.

**Qualifications/Requirements**:

- Completion of a relevant law qualification and admission or eligibility for admission to practice as a barrister and solicitor in Victoria is mandatory.
