About the branch and role
The Branch. The Litigation & Dispute Resolution Branch comprises a number of legal teams that provide specialist legal services to government departments and statutory bodies on matters which are topical and often involve public interest issues.
The role. The branch is seeking an experienced senior lawyer to join the VGSO as a Managing Principal Solicitor. Reporting to Lead Counsel, your role as a Managing Principal Solicitor will be to lead and supervise a team of lawyers, while providing high level legal advice across Government and efficiently managing complex and sensitive litigation.
The Areas of work. The core focus of this role will be to provide legal services to one of our key clients, Corrections Victoria. You will be required to efficiently manage complex and sensitive litigation and provide operational advice in relation to the Serious Offenders Act 2018.
The branch encourages diversity of practice and you will have the opportunity to be involved in other streams of work undertaken by the branch, which include:

- General civil, police civil and tortious claims
- State care, personal injury and negligence claims
- Inquests, supervision order matters, judicial review and statutory interpretation
- Commercial litigation.

About the successful applicant
You are regarded as a senior and highly experienced legal practitioner with a strong understanding of the structure and culture of government and of the political and legal sensitivities of operating within the public sector. Previous experience handling matters in relation to the Serious Offenders Act 2018 will be highly regarded.
You are adept at delivering legal services in a manner which is fit for purpose, whether that is providing robust written advice or conducting litigation in various courts and tribunals.
You understand the importance of having the right people, management and processes in place and are experienced in leading and developing high performing individuals and/or teams. You are an accomplished project manager and an inclusive leader.
As such, you will have the capacity to contribute strategic insight and drive continuous improvement. You will also have demonstrated business development and relationship management experience and have the ability to develop positive and effective client relationships.
