The Department of Justice and Community Safety (the department) is seeking a Solicitor to provide a critical role within the Office of the Special Investigator.

About the business unit
The Office of the Special Investigator (OSI) has been established as an independent statutory body to implement recommendations of the Royal Commission into the Management of Police Informants (Commission).
The OSI is required to investigate whether there is sufficient evidence to establish the commission of a criminal offence or offences connected with Victoria Police's use of Nicola Maree Gobbo as a human source and whether there is sufficient evidence to charge any current Victoria Police officers with a breach of discipline connected with Victoria Police's use of Ms Gobbo as a human source. The OSI is responsible for administering the Special Investigator Act 2021.
About the role
The position of Solicitor is responsible for providing legal advice, legal compliance advice, support and assistance to multidisciplinary investigation teams preparing and maintaining briefs of evidence and the commencement of proceedings.
The Solicitor will be required to have significant legal experience and a strong understanding of an investigative prosecutorial and/or litigious environment (including coercive powers and specialist investigative tools and activities) and significant experience in preparing for and drafting complex legal advice, correspondence, policy and procedure.

**Some of your duties will include**:

- Under the direction of the Investigations Team Leader and Principal Solicitor, support objective, fair, thorough, unbiased and timely investigations into potential criminal conduct and breaches of discipline.
- Provide authoritative written legal advice and analysis on complex matters to support investigations and other business requirements within the OSI.
- Advise, prepare and construct briefs of evidence for provision to the Director of Public Prosecutions.

About you

**To be successful in this role, you will have**:

- Knowledge of and experience in criminal law and/or litigation, including assessing and evaluating evidence.
- Knowledge and understanding of the principles and practices of investigation.

**Qualifications**:

- Bachelor of Laws or equivalent legal qualification from a recognised tertiary institution.
- Admission or eligibility to gain admission, to practise as an Australian Lawyer.
- Eligibility to acquire a practising certificate under the Legal Profession Uniform Law.
