**About the Role**

The Manager - Road Safety Fatality will state-wide oversee and manage the Department of Transport and Planning’s fatal crash review process in line with safe systems principles. The objective of DTP’s fatal crash review process is to understand why a fatal crash occurred, what caused fatal injuries, understand and document trends and what could be implemented to prevent future fatal crashes. The role will initially operate in a project phase to reform DTP’s Fatal Crash Review policy, guidelines, technology systems, staff capability, training and reporting. In time, the project will transition to an operational phase which will work collaboratively with regional crash investigators to conduct safe system based investigations of fatal crashes. The role will also work with staff responsible for road safety policy, programs, and practice to identify gaps in practice that could be uplifted to prevent future crashes. The role requires specialised skill in the safe system approach to road safety, project management and delivery, stakeholder management. A background in crash investigation would be highly desirable.

**Position Outcomes / Accountabilities**
- Policy and Program development and delivery - The role has effectively and successfully lead and managed delivery of complex programs, projects and initiatives; and develop evidenced based strategic directions and responses for the Department in relation to the future configuration state of the road network for the short, medium and long term, while identifying and managing priorities as they emerge.
- Strong Relationships - The role has fostered and maintained effective and strong relationships with key internal and external stakeholders and lead strategic partnerships within government to develop and deliver on the government’s Road Safety strategy, objectives and targets.
- Specialist and high-quality advice - Timely, high quality, authoritative strategic, tactical and operational advice has been provided to Ministers, the Secretary, senior leaders in the road safety partnership and executive leadership to support transport portfolio objectives; and respond to emerging and/or complex issues including highly complex reports, submissions, briefing papers, correspondence.
- Promote and support safe, inclusive and flexible team operations. The role has provided support and helped develop a inclusive space for all team members, working with others to achieve wider road safety objectives in a safe and flexible manner

**Qualifications and Experience**

**Mandatory**
- Experience in road safety engineering or policy
- A strong understand of the safe system approach to road safety

**Desirable**
- Previous experience in crash investigations with a focus on preventing future crashes (‘zero blame’)
- A tertiary qualification in engineering, or strong experience in policy related road safety fields
- Strong communications and negotiation skills and the ability to present complex information in a digestible form.
- Proven ability to develop and maintain strong partnerships with key stakeholders
