**About the team**

SafeWork NSW is the state’s workplace health and safety regulator. We work in partnership with businesses, workers and their representatives to create safe, healthy and productive workplaces across NSW. We secure compliance through, advice, education and enforcement of the work health and safety legislation.

The Metropolitan Compliance team are at the forefront of sustained safety in workplaces across the greater Sydney area. We have universal compliance expertise enabling us to response to any hazards, harms and industries. We respond when workers are injured or harmed to increase compliance and prevent recurrence. Often being the first interaction a business will have with Safework, we have a critical role in setting the foundations for a business to have a safe and productive workplace.

**About the role**

As an Assistant State Inspector, and as part of the leadership team in Metropolitan Compliance, you will be leading strategic compliance initiatives, responding to complex matters and representing the directorate with internal and external stakeholders. Using your compliance experience, you will provide NSW communities with strong regulatory service and proactively engage and influence key industry stakeholders. You will provide expert technical advice, education and compliance services that contribute to the reduction of harm and improvements of the work health and safety performance across a wide range of industries.

As part of the leadership team, you will contribute to the strategic direction of the Metropolitan Compliance directorate and will use your expert knowledge and experience to mentor your colleagues and drive process improvement.

Your duties will include:

- Attendance and contribution at internal and external meetings representing the Metropolitan Compliance directorate.
- Providing leadership and expert advice on identifying emerging trends, prevention strategies, and compliance and enforcement recommendations for identified non-compliance.
- Undertaking proactive site inspections, responding to requests for service, responding to incidents, and gathering evidence through preliminary incident investigations, to a high standard.
- Proactively engage with associations, government agencies, unions and the community in response to workplace incidents and complaints.
- Play a pivotal role in working with, and building the capability of, internal and external stakeholders and customers around work health and safety compliance.
- Utilise your high-level leadership, industry knowledge, project management and stakeholder engagement skills to develop and implement state-wide strategic industry initiatives.
- Producing high quality and accurate reports and recommendations to confirm your actions.

**About you**

You will be able to solve complex regulatory problems in a professional and customer focused manner and are a leader who thrives on sharing your knowledge through mentoring and coaching.

Tertiary qualifications in a relevant field are desirable, as well industry experience or relevant transferable skills.

**To be successful, you will have**:

- Demonstrated knowledge and experience in providing specialist advice and strategic leadership regarding compliance with relevant legislation to drive workplace safety
- Strong communication skills to proactively engage and influence key industry stakeholders, influence safety behaviour, undertake change management processes, and lead stakeholder engagements
- Work collaboratively to translate strategic direction into operational goals and build a shared understanding of the link between these and core business outcomes
- A strong work ethic, resilience to manage complex investigations and have a key focus on customer expectations whilst promoting NSW Public Service values
- Demonstrated experience to plan and deliver strategies as they relate to safety in workplaces
- Demonstrated experience in managing and leading programs or projects of work.
- Demonstrated knowledge and use of digital technology tools including proficiency in Microsoft Office suite.
- Work a 38-hour working week, including some weekends and participate in the After-Hours Emergency Response Service
- Receive an attractive salary package along with the required tools of the trade, including a vehicle with access to private use (currently at a cost of approximately $210 per fortnight)
