The School of Nursing and Midwifery at Deakin University is ranked in the top 1% of universities globally and is one of the largest schools of nursing and midwifery in Australia based across the four University campuses; Melbourne Burwood Campus, Geelong Waterfront Campus, Warrnambool Campus and in partnership with The National Indigenous Knowledges Education Research Innovation (NIKERI) Institute located on the Geelong Waurn Ponds Campus.

Western Health is the major public healthcare provider in Melbourne’s western metropolitan region, and one of the largest public health services in Victoria. With a workforce of over 12,000 employees, caring for a diverse and rapidly growing community of over 1 million people with complex care needs ranging from newborn through to older people. Western Health provides a comprehensive, integrated range of clinical services from various sites ranging from acute tertiary services through to subacute care and onsite and virtual ambulatory clinics. We also provide specialised services, as well as a combination of hospital, community-based, and in-reach services as well as inhome care.

Deakin University and Western Health have an established research centre, The Centre for Quality and Patient Safety Research Western Health Partnership. The purpose of this position is to provide academic and professional leadership to clinical and academic staff and students of the respective institutions, appropriate to the research focus and clinical priorities of the partners. This is in the form of nursing leadership in research programs, the development of inquiry-based research and activities to inform nursing clinical practice. The results should lead to improved outcomes for the quality and safety of patient care and higher professional recognition for both Western Health and Deakin University and the nursing and midwifery professions.

The Chair in Nursing (Western Health) will report jointly to; Executive Dean, Faculty of Health, through the Head, School of Nursing and Midwifery, and to the Executive Director, Nursing & Midwifery, Western Health.

**Your key responsibilities will include**:

- Establishing networks within Western Health, Deakin University, the local community and the national/international nursing professional community as well as strengthening links with industry and professional groups.
- Leading and taking part in university and health service committees, and actively contributing to the governance and collegial life of the University and Western Health.
- Promoting Western Health, the School and Faculty to prospective students and relevant professional, industry and government bodies in Australia and internationally. Undertaking mentoring of more junior academic staff and clinicians.
- Contributing to the achievement of Western Health patient safety and quality strategic priorities through the alignment of strategic priorities within QPS.
- Ensuring compliance of areas of responsibility with all legislative requirements and Western Health and University policies including equity and equal opportunity.
- Representing nursing and midwifery at Western Health as a member of the senior nursing leadership group.
- Providing a strong contribution to health service, university and state committees that enhance the reputation and activities of the Western Health partnership.

**Key Selection criteria for this role**:

- PhD in a relevant field together with eligibility or registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia as a registered nurse
- Demonstrable academic leadership and professional expertise in the field of nursing
- An internationally recognised research profile and scholarly publications in the field of nursing including domestic and/or international research linkages.
- Success in securing competitive research and/or commercial funding particularly, and pursuing opportunities to secure research funding.
- A proven record of attracting and successfully supervising Honours, Masters and PhD students
- Evidence of ability to build partnerships with professional, industry and government organisations to further relevant educational, research and entrepreneurial activities.
