**Our Opportunity**

The Assistant Commissioner / Special Counsel will report into the Executive Director and provide strategic, expert advice to the President, undertake stakeholder engagement, and support the Principal Legal Officer in the project management of the inquiry to ensure the reports and recommendations are best practice and on time.

**Who are we looking for?**
- ** Conducting Inquiries**
- researching and identifying the key issues involved in the inquiry;
- using experience to identify stakeholders of particular interest for the inquiry for both consultation and inclusion in any Advisory Committee;
- undertaking community consultations;
- undertaking high level analysis of complex issues and submissions;
- supporting the inquiry team to draft chapters for consultation documents and the final report;
- using analytical and conceptual skills to formulate, draft and evaluate proposals and recommendations for reform; and
- attending and potentially chairing ALRC Advisory Committee meetings.
- **Support legal staff**
- support the Principal Legal Officer in their leadership and project management of the inquiry; and
- contribute to the cohesion and effectiveness of the inquiry team by fostering a collaborative and cohesive culture, valuing excellence, innovation and initiative and sharing experience and knowledge.

**Selection Criteria**
- Expert knowledge of and / or experience working in surrogacy and / or related law.
- Demonstrated experience engaging with a range of diverse stakeholders in a sensitive and appropriate way.
- Proven legal research and writing skills and experience.
- Ability to provide strategic advice to senior decision makers.
- Ability to write clear and concise documents, to succinctly articulate complex ideas and concepts and to communicate with influence.
- High level analytical and conceptual skills in legal policy development and implementation within a government, academic or related framework.
- Demonstrated capacity to foster productive and supportive working relationships, working as part of a team, sharing information and ideas, and considering the views of others.
- Ability to work independently, to prioritise tasks and to set schedules in order to meet specified deadlines.
