**How this position will Make the Difference to City of Melbourne**

The Policy Advisor contributes to the Lord Mayor’s Office (LMO) objectives by providing strategic advice and briefing material to assist the Lord Mayor and Deputy Lord Mayor in their civic leadership responsibilities and the organisation generally on matters relevant to Council business and stakeholder engagement.

The position of Policy Advisor will contribute to providing high-level policy advice from the Executive Leadership Team and other stakeholders to the Lord Mayor and Deputy Lord Mayor on a wide range of matters; this includes drafting policy documents, guidelines, and external correspondence.

The position includes responsibility for undertaking research, analysis of proposals and external policy submissions. The position will at times, provide Secretariat and other support to the team.

**What you will bring**
- Ability to demonstrate and display City of Melbourne Values - accountability, integrity, courage, respect for self and others, and striving for excellence.
- 5+ years’ experience in issue management in a complex and fast-moving environment where there may be competing claims, priorities and interests that require strategic planning and skilled judgment to achieve a positive resolution.
- Tertiary qualification(s) in public policy, law, economics, social science or similar is desirable.
- Extensive experience in undertaking policy research, investigation and analysis, and the ability to present advice both verbally and in writing within a large, complex organisation.
- Highly developed communication skills, both verbal and written. Including the ability to prepare briefs, reports, complex correspondence, presentations, and speech notes.
- Highly developed interpersonal and stakeholder management skills and demonstrated professional, diplomatic, assertive, discreet, and courteous ability.
- An understanding of Australia’s system of government, including Local Government, and the role of Councillors, the Lord Mayor and the Deputy Lord Mayor.
- Proven discretion and judgement in dealing with sensitive and confidential information in a high-pressure environment with a high level of media or public relations focus.
- Highly developed organisational skills and demonstrated flexibility in a team environment, with an ability to manage competing priorities and work to deadlines.
