**A little bit about us**:
The Bureau of Infrastructure and Transport Research Economics (BITRE) is a branch of the Commonwealth Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications and the Arts. It provides economic analysis, research and statistics in order to inform Australian Government policy development on infrastructure and transport issues, and to advance wider community understanding. BITRE also holds unique aviation, maritime, road and rail transport data collections which are made available in a number of publication series, and is responsible for the publication of individual research projects.

BITRE is staffed by talented data analysts, researchers and economists who examine critical issues impacting transport and infrastructure. We provide a dynamic and supportive work environment with an emphasis on learning and development.

**The opportunity we have available**:
There is a position available in the Infrastructure and Surface Transport Statistics section. The section collects, disseminates and analyses statistics in areas such as infrastructure investment, the transport network, international and domestic maritime activity and freight, the major container ports, rail freight and passenger tasks, characteristics of the vehicles, ships and rolling stock operating in Australia and detailed international trade data collected by Customs.

The position available is in Maritime Freight Statistics. However, a merit pool may be established for similar roles in BITRE for future vacancies.

**What will you do?**:
The current position available in maritime freight statistics involves:
- Collecting data from stakeholders;-
- Cleaning data including reviewing it for inconsistencies and investigating where required;-
- Regularly publishing summary tables of the data;-
- Maintaining and updating maritime freight databases;-
- Providing statistical analysis and advice to internal and external stakeholders. This will involve a mixture of ad-hoc questions and larger pieces of work to assist policy and program development.While the position focuses on maritime statistics, there will be opportunities, as time and interest allow, to assist in other work being done in the section. This will allow you to obtain a broader view of the work of the Department. You will also have the opportunity to investigate new ways to improve data collection, cleaning, analysis and publication.
