**The Opportunity**

The UNSW Water Research Laboratory (WRL), which is within the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering, has an opportunity for a Technical Officer. The primary purpose of the role is to provide safe, efficient, and effective day-to-day technical support at the WRL for the design and manufacturing of specialised equipment, experimental facilities and hydraulic models. You will also be responsible for implementing and maintaining the safety systems in the WRL.

This role reports to the WRL Director-Industry Research and has no direct reports.
- Salary, Level 5/6: $78,130 to $97,576 per annum + 17% superannuation
- Full time
- Fixed term - 2-years
- Location: Manly Vale - Sydney, Australia
- Onsite role 5 days per week

The Water Research Laboratory at Manly Vale is a world-leading academic research and consulting laboratory that endeavours to tackle the most challenging and pressing water-engineering problems faced by the world today relating to water and the environment.

**Skills and Experience**

**Level 5**
- A trade certificate or diploma in machining, construction or similar; or an equivalent level of knowledge gained through any other combination of education, training and experience.
- Demonstrated mechanical/industrial engineering or instrumental experience.
- A strong mechanical aptitude with the ability to operate and maintain testing equipment.
- Well-developed communication skills with demonstrated ability to advise clients on the technical aspects of laboratory and research facilities.
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a wider technical team for the benefit of the School.
- A reasonable level of physical fitness is required regarding the lifting of heavy lab materials and equipment. Lifting aids are provided for the handling of materials/equipment above legal lifting limits.
- A driver’s licence recognised by RMS NSW.
- A willingness to be trained in the use of crane and forklift equipment that operate within the laboratories and attend other training as necessary.
- Competent computer skills, including experience using Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and Teams.
- Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training, with the ability and capacity to implement required UNSW health and safety policies and procedures.

**Level 6 (in addition to the above)**
- Extensive experience in building hydraulic flow models and field test rigs.
- Proven ability to undertake precision workmanship with timber, plastics and metal.
- Demonstrated laboratory or field equipment development and design experience.
- Demonstrated experience in field data collection.
- High level organisation skills with a demonstrated ability to deal with multiple tasks and projects, establish priorities and meet deadlines.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to critically analyse designs and test methods and make suggestions for improvements.
- Proven ability to work independently to analyse situations, identify risks and problem solve, whilst also contributing effectively to a team.
- Sound knowledge of relevant testing standards.
