Role:
As part of the Victorian African Communities Action Plan, education is identified as a key focus area and funding is available to employ School Community Liaison Officers in school communities with high populations of African young people to improve their connection to education and provide tailored support.
The School Community Liaison Officer position is funded through the Victorian African Communities Action Plan and the Strengthening School Engagements Grants (Place-based Partnerships for School Engagement and Completion Initiative).
This position supports the Ascot Vale West Primary School community and a cluster of neighbouring schools with high populations of African young people to increase school engagement, strengthen partnerships with families and community and facilitate activities to increase retention and school completion.
As part of the funding agreement for both initiatives, the School Community Liaison Officer will work across settings to:
- promote student engagement and leadership opportunities to foster sense of value, leadership and identity and belonging
- increase school engagement, strengthening partnerships with families and community and facilitating activities to increase engagement, participation and achievement
- build links with African community organisations to access community guidance and knowledge and further levels of familial support
- build cultural safety and inclusivity within school communities
- support successful transitions into and out of primary school for African-Australian students
- increase student engagement and leadership through a range of tailored strategies including in-school and after-school programs
The role plays a leading role in supporting African heritage students to be well-prepared, confident and excited about their transition to primary or secondary school. Working alongside key professionals across these settings to identify individual needs, programs and interventions that could be utilised to support students, providing every opportunity to experience early success and for positive engagement and wellbeing outcomes.
There is an expectation that the School Community Liaison Officer will require travel to other sites of delivery including Flemington Primary School, Debney Meadows Primary School and to the DE Central Office in Melbourne CBD.

**Responsibilities**:
1. Provide support to school communities they are working with to establish and maintain communication between young people, families and the local community
2. Work directly with groups of young people or individuals, planning interventions to ensure young people are connected to an education
1. Work directly with young people to provide platforms for student voice, facilitate leadership opportunities and facilitate activities that aligns with their needs
2. Facilitate information sessions for parents to support an increased understanding of the education system and platforms and increase engagement with parent teacher nights, information sessions and school celebrations
3. Facilitate professional learning for school staff on cultural responsiveness and safety coordinate workshops and forums for the school and local community
4. Facilitate access to afterschool programs and homework clubs, to offer support and mentoring outside of the school
5. Support school leaders with the rollout of the cultural competency framework and other activities aimed at strengthening inclusivity for diverse communities
6. Provide regular reports to support the implementation, evaluation and ongoing monitoring of the project (and action plan) across settings
7. Participate in a statewide community of practices and statewide planning days with other School Community Liaison Officers
