**Organisational Relationships**:
Reports to the Governor and the Minister. The Registrar of the Board will give effect to the policies and decisions of the Board.

The _Social Workers Registration Act 2021_ has the commencement date, 1 July 2025, if not commenced earlier by Proclamation. This requires the establishment of the Social Workers Registration Board of South Australia. The functions and powers assigned or conferred on the Board are under this Act.

The Board consists of seven members appointed by the Governor, of whom:

- Four must be persons who have extensive experience in social work; and
- One must be a legal practitioner; and
- One must be a representative of the general community.

**THE ROLE**

**_Position Objective:_**

The Social Worker Registration Scheme through the Act, is responsible for the establishment and maintenance of a registration system for social workers; and to safeguard the public interest. The Board will be responsible for developing codes of conduct, professional standards, and ethical guidelines to support social workers.

**_Key Duties:_**

The Board has the following functions which reflects the role and duties of a Board member:

- **Regulatory Administration**:

- Administer and uphold the provisions of the Social Workers Registration Act 2021 to regulate the practice of social work.
- Establish and maintain the register of registered social workers.
- Evaluate and determine qualifications and requirements for registration under the Act.
- **Professional Standards and Ethics**:

- Prepare or endorse codes of conduct, professional standards, and ethical guidelines for registered social workers.
- Contribute to the definition of social work services in accordance with section 19 of the Act.
- **Registration Processes**:

- Establish transparent processes for handling complaints related to the practice of social work.
- **Disciplinary Proceedings**:

- Hear and make determinations in disciplinary proceedings against individuals, ensuring fairness and adherence to due process.
- **Collaboration and Compliance**:

- Collaborate with fellow Board members and stakeholders to fulfill the functions assigned under the Act.
- Ensure compliance with all legal and regulatory requirements.
- Carry out other functions assigned to the Board under the Act or by the Minister.
- **Financial Oversight and Reporting**:

- Ensure proper accounting records are maintained in accordance with the Social Workers Registration Act 2021.
- Report annually to the Minister.

The Board will convene approximately six times per year. In addition to these meetings, members should be prepared to dedicate time for pre-meeting preparation. Occasional ad-hoc meetings may be required on a case-by-case basis to address emerging needs and opportunities.

The Board may establish committees to advise the Board or to carry out functions on behalf of the Board.

**_Key skills and experience required:_**

Extensive experience in social work (4 members required)

Legal practitioner background (1 member required)

Strong understanding of the general community's perspectives and concerns (1 member required)
- Proven governance and decision-making skills.
- Knowledge of regulatory frameworks and compliance.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to contribute to the development of codes of conduct, standards, and ethical guidelines.
- Previous experience in handling disciplinary proceedings is desirable.

**_Specific skills and experience:_**

**Social Worker**:

- A strong understanding and background within the field of Social Work, including practice standards, ethics, and relevant legislation.
- Demonstrated leadership ability to interpret and write policy, undertake investigative projects, and an understanding of regulation.
- High-level understanding of accreditation processes.

**Legal Practitioner**:

- A strong understanding of Boards, professional regulation, accreditation, and investigation.
- Demonstrated ability to assist the Board in understanding and fulfilling its duties and obligations in the regulatory environment.

**Representative of the General Community**:

- A strong understanding of good governance.
- A general understanding of social work-related issues and an appreciation of the broad social, political, and economic trends influencing it.
- A strong capability to understand and analyse complex issues.
- Effective collaboration skills, working with others in teams and networks.

**_Remuneration and tenure_**
