The School of Mathematics and Statistics currently has more than sixty continuing academic staff and more than thirty research staff as well as visiting academics. UNSW is the top university in Australia for mathematics across the CWTS Leiden, ARWU, USNews, and QS rankings. In Statistics, the School has research strengths in Bayesian and Monte Carlo Methods, Biostatistics and Ecology, Combinatorics, Data Science, Finance and Risk Analysis, Nonparametric Statistics, Optimisation, Stochastic Analysis, and Stochastic Modelling. The School’s research groups are interconnected, with frequent interactions between groups and with other schools and faculties both within and outside UNSW. The School also hosts the newly established UNSW Data Science Hub which is a major strategic initiative of the Faculty of Science to cultivate and promote foundational and applied research in Data Science.

The Research Associate will undertake collaborative and self-directed research on an ARC-funded Laureate Fellow Project. At the core of the project, we seek to understand the realm of “quantum” or “quantised” geometry. The aim of the work at hand is to understand harmonic analysis on noncommutative groups through operator theoretic methods, and in particular to understand the generalisation of Fourier analysis and singular integrals to group von Neumann algebras. This requires an understanding of modern analysis and operator theory, building upon noncommutative group theory, singular integrals, and the theory of von Neumann algebras.

- Fixed Term - 24 months
- Full-time (35 hours per week)

The role of Research Associate reports to Laureate Professor, Fedor Sukochev and has no direct reports.

**Specific responsibilities for this role include**:

- Conduct research activities in noncommutative harmonic analysis and von Neumann algebras.
- Provide comprehensive analysis and reports in relation to the research project in a timely and effective manner.
- Participate in developing of the theory of noncommutative singular integrals, Fourier transforms, convergence for generalised Fourier series, and interpolation theory.
- Perform research collaboratively and individually, which will lead to high quality research articles for publication in internationally refereed mathematics journals.
- Present results of research at conferences and other venues.
- Coordinate research activities and participate in the setting of future research directions of the project.
- Align with and actively demonstrate the UNSW Values in Action: Our Behaviours and the UNSW Code of Conduct.

To be successful in this role you will have:

- Relevant background in operator theory and harmonic analysis and a Ph.D. in mathematics.
- Demonstrated high level analytical and problem solving skills.
- A significant track record of research publications (relative to career opportunity).
- Demonstrated capacity to deliver high quality project outcomes in a timely manner.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team with mínimal supervision.
- An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
- Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
