**As the Policy Specialist you'll manage strategic policy issues cutting across the Retail Energy business, delivering evidence-based positioning and ensuring consistency with business-wide priorities.**
Supporting the Head of Policy & Regulation on the sign-off of external consultation responses and related formal submissions, and proactive planning for policy engagement opportunities you'll develop thought leadership agenda, evidence, insight and data on key issues, through commissioning and undertaking policy research, building new evidence-based policy positions and support amongst external stakeholders.
**Key Accountabilities**
- Assist in the delivery of thought leadership projects, building evidence base on key policy areas, through partnership with respected economic consultancies and academics as appropriate.
- Introduce shared systems and processes to allow for the central management of collateral, issue and risk reporting and business planning.
- Ensure consistency across the Retail Energy business's policy positions and ensure these are captured within planning and reporting processes.
- Lead on sector-wide consultations, relating to issues including net zero, energy costs, industrial strategy, budget submissions and “whole of industry” issues, working with teams across the Retail Energy business.
- Develop and maintain policy risk and priorities registers.
- Lead on briefings for senior commercial leaders for relevant external engagement.
**Required competencies and experience**
- Policy expert with high quality strategic, technical, economics or legal qualifications and significant energy sector experience at a senior level.
- Senior level experience in an energy-based policy or strategy role and significant wider experience of working on complex public policy issues in regulated sectors.
- Experience of influencing at senior stakeholder level
- Experience of drafting internal briefing documents for senior business leaders, and external positioning for a corporate (for example responses to government consultations and the market operator)
- Highly collaborative, enabling consistent positions to be developed across multiple teams seamlessly
- Strong commercial acumen, ensuring policy positions are fully consistent with enabling commercial objectives
- Able to translate complex concepts into clear and concise messaging (verbal and written), and delivering with impact to senior audiences
- Confident and credible: able to produce a high volume of factually accurate, quality reports/documents to short deadlines - inspires confidence from senior colleagues.
- Skilled in managing complex projects including commissioning external research, involving the management of budgets, virtual teams and tight project deadlines.
- Excellent strategic planning skills - able to horizon scan to identify strategic risks and opportunities for the business.
- Strong planning and reporting skills - able to maintain live policy logs, risk registers, core presentations and fact sheets.
