Brisbane, Australia Carpentaria Land Council Aboriginal Corporation (CLCAC) Full time

About the role

Are you ready to make a meaningful impact on Indigenous land and environment management?

Do you have a passion for community development and the preservation of traditional lands and waters?

Carpentaria Land Council Aboriginal Corporation (CLCAC) has an exciting opportunity for a dynamic individual to join our organisation, representing the rights and interests of Traditional Owners for over 38 years.

Nestled in the breathtaking Lower Gulf of Carpentaria, our organization is a beacon of hope for nine language groups whose ancestral lands and waters span this remarkable region. We are proud to provide unwavering support to our dedicated Indigenous Ranger Units.

As our Land and Environment Projects Officer, you will be at the forefront of scientific, technical, and on-ground support for the Ngumari Waanyi Rangers. Collaborating closely with the Ranger Coordinator, you will play a vital role in developing and implementing innovative strategies, programs, and on-ground projects that enhance Indigenous land and sea management and drive impactful community development outcomes.
- In consultation with the Ranger Coordinator, your role will see you:_
- Assisting in continually developing innovative strategies and programs that enhance Indigenous land and environment management and drive community development outcomes;
- Building the capacity of the Ngumari Waanyi Rangers to understand scientific methodologies and to independently undertake monitoring and evaluation of on-ground management;
- Facilitating the integration of Traditional Ecological Knowledge with contemporary natural resource management practice and western science in on-ground activities;
- Developing funding submissions and prepare program evaluation and milestone reports;
- Ensuring responsible and effective financial management of annual budgets.

Someone who possesses not only exceptional communication skills but also a genuine connection with our cause. Your ability to engage and empower communities will be crucial in fostering positive relationships with Traditional Owners, stakeholders, and other relevant parties. Together, we can create a united front for sustainable land and environment management.

In this fast-paced role, proficiency in GIS mapping will be a valuable asset. As you contribute to the design and execution of projects, your GIS expertise will ensure accurate data visualization, informed decision-making, and effective resource allocation. Your dedication to ongoing learning and development will empower you to continually bring new and innovative ideas to the table.

Other key skills include:

- Tertiary level qualifications in Environmental Resource Management, Marine Biology, Environmental Science, Fire Ecology or equivalent and considerable experience in the field;
- Demonstrated experience and confidence in working with Aboriginal communities, working alongside small teams and/or coordinating on-ground natural and cultural resource management projects, preferably with Indigenous organisations in remote regions of Australia;
- A demonstrated understanding of contemporary natural resource management issues, together with an understanding of traditional knowledge and practices with the best available science and ensure they are effectively managed;
- Current ‘C’ class manual driver’s licence and Blue Card Positive Notice “Working with Children” (WCC) or the ability to obtain one.

Based in the thriving regional City of Cairns in Far North Queensland, surrounded by lush tropical rainforest and on the doorstep to the World Heritage listed Great Barrier Reef and Daintree Rainforest, this opportunity offers the perfect work-life balance, with travel to the lower Gulf of Carpentaria in outback Queensland. Travel to the Waanyi region and some remote fieldwork will be required.
