The Australian Workers’ Union (AWU) is seeking a Legal or Industrial Officer to join our team at the Victorian Branch.

The AWU is the nation’s oldest blue-collar trade union, proudly representing thousands of working Australians from a diverse range of industries.

**POSITION OVERVIEW**
- **Type: Full Time**:

- **Location: AWU Victorian Office, West Melbourne, VIC**:

- **Immediate start desirable**

**THE ROLE**

The successful applicant’s primary responsibilities will be to provide advice and representation in industrial and employment law matters including, but not limited to:

- disputes and claims arising under legislation and industrial instruments;
- enterprise bargaining;
- industrial action;
- termination of employment and discrimination; and
- right of entry.

Typical duties include:

- preparing, managing, and appearing for the AWU and its members in cases before industrial tribunals and courts;
- providing legal, industrial and strategic advice to branch leadership, officials, delegates and members;
- assisting with enterprise bargaining;
- interacting and liaising with regulatory bodies and industrial/legal staff from other AWU branches and other unions;
- monitoring and researching developments in legislation and case law;
- assisting with the preparation and delivery of training to branch officials and delegates in industrial and employment law.

**SELECTION CRITERIA**

**ESSENTIAL**

**The successful applicant must possess**:

- tertiary qualifications in law or industrial relations, or equivalent experience in a similar role;
- sound knowledge of Australian industrial relations and employment law;
- strong advocacy, negotiation, and problem-solving skills;
- excellent verbal and written communication skills;
- proficiency in preparing written submissions and reports;
- ability to manage and prioritise a varied caseload, exercise good judgement and work independently within a team environment;
- commitment to unionism and a belief in social justice;
- high-level computer skills; and
- ability to obtain a right of entry permit.

**DESIRABLE**
- a current practicing certificate;
- experience working for a trade union or labour law firm;
- experience appearing in industrial tribunals and courts;
- prior involvement in the labour movement or progressive community organisations;
- experience in enterprise bargaining; or
- a current driver’s licence.
