Reporting to the Director of Legal Advisory, the Principal Solicitor, Yoo-rrook Justice Commission will form part of the Legal Advisory senior management team within the Legal, Privacy and Integrity Branch. The Principal Solicitor will be responsible for supporting the Deartment of Health's response to the Yoo-rrook Justice Commission by providing high quality legal advice in relation to issues associated with, or arising from, the department's response. This role is dedicated to supporting the department's response to the Yoo-rrook Justice Commission and will work closely with the department's Aboriginal Health Division. Overseeing two Solicitors, the Principal Solicitor will interface with the Victorian Government Solicitors Office (VGSO), external legal firms and the Branch to promote the preparation of high-quality policy and strategic advice to the Secretary, Ministers and Cabinet that supports appropriate and well-drafted government engagement with the Yoo-rrook Justice Commission.

The Yoo-rrook Justice Commission is the first formal truth-telling process into historical and ongoing injustices experienced by First Peoples in Victoria since colonisation. Guided by its values and principles, the Yoo-rrook Justice Commission will:

- establish an official record of the impact of colonisation on First Peoples in Victoria;
- develop a shared understanding among all Victorians of the impact of colonisation, as well as the diversity, strength and resilience of First Peoples' cultures; and
- make recommendations for healing, system reform and practical changes to laws, policy and education, as well as to matters to be included in future treaties.

The Yoo-rrook Justice Commission is independent of government and the First Peoples' Assembly of Victoria. It has been established as an independent Royal Commission under the Inquiries Act 2014. See here the Letters Patent that set out the Yoo-rrook Justice Commission's mandate.

The Yoo-rrook Justice Commission is unique among Royal Commissions because, while it is for the benefit of all Victorians, First Peoples drove its design and remain at its centre.
