**Description**:
NYU Sydney is seeking a lecturer to teach the course 'Expressive Culture: Film' to undergraduate students during the NYU semester of August-November 2023.

This course is a central part of New York University’s College Core Curriculum. In Expressive Culture, students explore the complexities of artistic expression by focusing on one of five media: sounds, images, words, performance, or film. Each course introduces requisite historical, formal, and critical vocabularies; examines fundamental issues associated with interpretation of the arts; and investigates the complex relations between artistic activity and other facets of social and political life. Responsibilities of the instructor include preparing and leading the weekly class sessions, course coordination, writing assignments, and grading. Lecturers are paid at competitive casual academic rates aligned with local enterprise agreements. In addition to their teaching duties, they will be paid to attend periodic meetings and training, including an induction meeting during the orientation week prior to the start of the semester.

Classes take place at the University of Sydney's Camperdown/Darlington Campus.

**Course Description**

How has Australian cinema engaged with significant and often contested historical, political and cultural events in the nation’s past? We study films offering critical perspectives on the history of colonisation in Australia, the legacies of the Stolen Generations, the controversies surrounding Australia’s role in World War One, and Australia’s relationships with its Pacific Asian neighbours, focusing on films that have marked significant shifts in public consciousness about the past, such as Rabbit-Proof Fence (2002) and Balibo (2009). We also consider films that employ innovative narrative and aesthetic strategies for exploring the relationship between the past and the present such as Ten Canoes (2006) and The Tracker (2002). Students develop critical vocabulary for analysing how filmmakers approach the use of memory, testimony, re-enactment, researched detail, allegory, and archival sources across a diverse range of examples.

**Qualifications**:
Applicants must be based in Sydney, and should hold a doctorate in film, media studies or a related field, and have demonstrated experience teaching university students at the undergraduate level. Experience teaching or studying in a U.S.based college or university is preferred.
