Homeostasis of the extracellular matrix (ECM) is critical for correct organ and tissue function. It plays a critical role in normal tissue function and pathological disease progression. Both the biochemical and biomechanical properties of the ECM contribute to modulating the behaviour of resident cells and are more than just passive bystanders. In tissue diseases such as cancer, the ECM undergoes significant change. These changes, driven by both tumour and stromal cells, feed into the progression of the disease. As such, changes in the ECM mark significant transition events in disease progression.

Understanding how the changing ECM facilitates tumour progression and metastasis is an important step in the development of new therapeutic approaches for the treatment of cancer. Our research combines in vitro and in vivo models of disease, in particular breast, pancreatic and lung cancer, to focus on how ECM remodelling influences progression, therapy response, and metastatic dissemination in solid tumours.

The Opportunity & Key Responsibilities

We are currently seeking a dedicated Research Officer (PostDoc) who will be responsible for planning and conducting experiments under supervision within the lab and driving forward the discovery of, development and implementation of novel matrix targeting approaches for the treatment of solid tumours.

Reporting to the Laboratory Head - Matrix and Metastasis, A/Prof Thomas Cox, this is a two year full-time, fixed term position with high possibility for merit-based extension.

About You

**Required Skills**:

- A PhD (or equivalent) in molecular biology, bioengineering or biochemistry
- A working knowledge of Matrix Biology and/or Cancer Biology
- Exceptional laboratory and analytical skills, with meticulous attention to detail and an ability to carry out high quality work routinely
- Experience with and/or willingness to undertake _in vivo_ research, including handling of small rodents
- Experience with _in vitro_ cell culture of mammalian cell lines
- High motivation and level of commitment to achieving scientific goals
- Excellent time management skills and ability to work independently
- Strong planning and organisation skills, including maintaining scientific records
- Experience in data analysis, including statistics
- Experience in presenting data orally
- High motivation and level of commitment to achieving scientific goals
- Good networking, collaboration, and teamwork skills
- Confidence in communicating with a wide range of stakeholders
- The ability to work with other staff in a cooperative manner
- Strong verbal and written communication skills in English

Desirable Skills
- Experience in 2D and 3D experimental models of cancer
- Experience in conventional imaging techniques
- Experience in writing scientific publications
- High quality publication record
- Working knowledge of programming/script languages including Python and/or R
