Westmead Hospital – Fixed Term (to 31 January 2027) Visiting Medical Officer – Neurosurgery

Applications are invited from suitably qualified medical practitioners for the Visiting Medical Officer position in the Western Sydney Local Health District. This position will be primarily located at Westmead Hospital within the Department of Neurosurgery. Successful applicants will assist with the high demands of both surgical and clinical waitlists for spinal surgery. The Neurosurgery Department provides a tertiary and quaternary service for the patients across the LHD. The unit is busy with the entire spectrum sub-specialty neurosurgery offered across the department. Applicants expecting to be awarded fellowship within 6 months are eligible to apply. This appointment is for a Fixed Term period ending 31 January 2027.

Essential Requirements for Appointment
  1. Possess or be eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia and Fellowship of the RACS or equivalent as provided for in the Health Insurance Act 1997. Must have Australian Citizenship or Permanent Australian Residency. Must hold a current NSW Environment Protection Authority license (if applicable).
  2. Sound clinical knowledge in Neurosurgery demonstrated through successful clinical practice in an environment appropriate to the requirements of the position.
  3. Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) or satisfactory completion of training with examination pending.

Conditions of appointment are in accordance with the Health Services Act 1997 and Public Hospitals (Visiting Medical Officers Sessional Contracts) Determination 2014.

Selection Criteria
  1. FRACS (Neurosurgery) or satisfactory completion of neurosurgery training.
  2. Evidence of satisfactory completion of neurosurgery training. A demonstrated interest or experience in spinal surgery.
  3. Demonstrated skills and attitudes appropriate for practice as a Senior Medical Practitioner including:
    • Proven ability to work effectively and harmoniously with medical and other health services colleagues as part of a multi-disciplinary health care team.
    • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with patients and colleagues.
    • Excellent organisational, supervision and collaboration skills with demonstrated ability to build respectful relationships.
    • Maintaining and developing knowledge, skills and professional performance to the level required for contemporary practice.
    • Experience and involvement in quality assurance activities and translation of research into practice to improve patient safety and quality.
  4. Demonstrated ability to manage time and resources efficiently and contributing to the effectiveness and efficiency of the health care system.
  5. Demonstrated aptitude for clinical leadership which is evidenced by:
    • Systems thinking and risk-taking aptitude.
    • Commitment to self -care and personal development.
    • Capacity to maintain personal integrity, tolerate stress and demonstrate resilience.
