The Team:

The Preanalytics Team operates within Pathology Services at the Royal Hobart Hospital, Tasmania's largest public pathology provider. This dynamic and multicultural group plays a critical role as the "gatekeepers" of pathology samples. Their responsibilities include:
  • Receiving, accessioning, and data entry of specimens for diagnostic analysis.
  • Ensuring accurate and timely processing of samples to support clinical decision-making.
  • Collaborating across departments to maintain high standards in healthcare delivery.
  • Contributing to improved outcomes for patients, staff, and the broader Tasmanian community

This team is essential to the smooth operation of pathology services, ensuring that every sample is handled with precision and care from the moment it arrives.

The Role:

The Preanalytics Team are responsible for determining if samples and request forms are appropriate for analysis.

Preanalytics also performs a referral role dispatching samples nationally and internationally.

You will need to:
  • Ensure that specimens are handled, stored, prepared and distributed appropriately. Centrifuge specimens where necessary and prepare the required number of accurately labelled aliquots. Ensure that the correct specimen is received in the laboratory for analysis.
  • Assist with the receipt of pathology specimens, including data entry.
  • Prepare specimens for analysis/examination, transport or storage.

Details of appointment:

One fixed term full time, shift worker (fully rotational) position, working 76 hours per fortnight, commencing as soon as possible, until 12 December 2026.

One fixed term part time, shift worker (fully rotational) position, working 68.4 hours per fortnight, commencing as soon as possible, until 29 August 2026.
  • notwithstanding hours to be negotiated with the successful applicant.

Applicants should note that, for a period of twelve months from the date of publication, this selection process may be used to fill subsequent or similar full time, part time, and casual vacancies.

Salary: $73,811 to $79,779 per annum (Pro rata). Our Employer 12% superannuation contribution is on top of this amount.
  • Salary range is in accordance with Public Sector Unions Wages Agreement 2022.

Eligibility:

Successful applicants will be required to meet the essential criteria.
  • An Associate Diploma from a recognised tertiary institution, or an *equivalent qualification, appropriate to the nature of the work OR relevant training and/or experience determined in accordance with the provisions of Section 37 of the State Service Act 2000
  • Knowledge and expertise consistent with qualifications recognised at Certificate III and IV or equivalent level

Registration/licences that are essential requirements of this role must remain current and valid at all times whilst employed in this role and the status of these may be checked at any time during employment. It is the employee's responsibility to ensure that registration/licences remain current and to advise the Employer if their circumstances change. This includes notifying the Employer if a registration/licence is revoked, cancelled or has its conditions altered.
