About the role

Are you a strategic and hands-on construction leader with a proven track record of delivering complex, high-value, multi-site retail and infrastructure projects? We're seeking a Construction Project Manager to lead the planning and execution of a national capital works portfolio, spanning full knockdown rebuilds, format upgrades, and equipment rollouts.

This is not a traditional project management role. Proven project management experience is essential—you must be capable of managing budgets, schedules, contractors, and site outcomes to the highest standards. At the same time, this role carries program-level responsibilities: governing multiple concurrent workstreams across a national portfolio, ensuring strategic alignment, robust governance, and seamless integration at scale.

You will orchestrate diverse stakeholders, implement commercial and risk controls across projects and programs, and provide clear, confident reporting to executive leadership. As a portfolio leader, you will set the standard for governance, commercial discipline, project administration, and stakeholder engagement—while maintaining a relentless focus on safety, risk management, and on-the-ground execution.

In this pivotal leadership role, you'll report to the National Construction Manager and be accountable for portfolio planning, risk and safety leadership, stakeholder management, commercial governance, and continuous improvement—delivering projects and programs that are safe, sustainable, and aligned with business priorities.

What you'll be doing

  • Deliver high-value, multi-site construction projects end-to-end, ensuring time, cost, and quality benchmarks are consistently achieved.
  • Oversee multiple concurrent workstreams, developing integrated master schedules and resource plans that drive portfolio-level efficiency.
  • Lead and align cross-functional stakeholders (Property, Operations, Finance, Environment, Regulatory) to achieve cohesive outcomes across the national program.
  • Direct contractor performance, scope control, and risk management with a focus on accountability and commercial discipline.
  • Enforce safety, environmental compliance, and statutory obligations rigorously across all project sites.
  • Report with clarity and precision to executive leadership on progress, risk, performance metrics, and program alignment.
  • Champion a high-performance culture by embedding lessons learned, driving continuous improvement, and setting the standard for stakeholder excellence.

Key Accountabilities

  • Governance & Compliance: Apply stage gates, procurement policies, and delegated authority with discipline, ensuring all projects and programs meet corporate and regulatory requirements.
  • Scheduling & Planning: Develop and control integrated workstreams using tools such as Primavera and MS Project, driving efficiency and portfolio-wide coordination.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Build trust and alignment across Retail Operations, HSE, Finance, Authorities, and external partners to secure timely, high-quality outcomes.
  • Commercial Management: Oversee CAPEX forecasting, procurement, and cost control, holding delivery partners accountable for value and performance.
  • Decision Making: Exercise delegated authority for capital expenditure decisions within approved thresholds, contractor appointments, and sequencing of projects, escalating to the National Construction Manager where required.
  • Safety Leadership: Enforce WHS, OEMS, and AS/NZS standards with rigour, embedding a zero-harm mindset across all sites and teams.
  • Continuous Improvement: Capture lessons learned and embed sustainability, innovation, and process enhancements into every phase of delivery.
  • Team Culture & Leadership: Lead with resilience and integrity, mentor high-performing teams, and foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, and ethical conduct.

Qualifications

About You

You will bring a strong foundation in construction project management, with a proven record of delivering multi-site capital works from initiation to completion. This includes experience in budget control, scheduling, contractor performance, and project close-out.

Beyond hands-on delivery, you'll demonstrate program-level capabilities: applying governance frameworks, driving portfolio prioritisation, and orchestrating stakeholders across multiple concurrent projects. You have a track record of executive-level reporting and influence, showing that you can operate confidently at both the site and strategic levels.

You will also bring:

  • Experience in corporate construction, ideally with exposure to multi-site retail rollouts (e.g., service stations, QSRs, or retail networks).
  • A degree in Civil or Mechanical Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field.
  • Strong commercial acumen and familiarity with project/program management tools and systems (SAP, Altus, Power BI).
  • The ability to work seamlessly across operational and strategic environments.
  • A growth mindset—passionate about continuous improvement, team development, and delivering value for stakeholders.

What Sets You Apart

  • Proven track record of shaping and steering multi-stream construction programs with national or regional impact, ensuring cohesive delivery across diverse stakeholders and functions.
  • Strategic mindset with the ability to manage complexity across multiple concurrent projects.
  • Proven experience delivering projects in a highly regulated environment.
  • Strong communicator who thrives in cross-functional and fast-paced environments.
  • Focused on value engineering, simplicity, and outcomes—always thinking one step ahead.

Benefits

  • We are flexible. Many of our teams have embraced hybrid work, balancing time spent remote working, with time spent at an office to connect and work together where it adds value.
  • We value recognition. We have an internal recognition platform amplifying the achievements of those who do great work and demonstrate our capabilities and values.
  • Career development: We invest in growth. High performers will have opportunities to expand into program leadership roles, contribute to enterprise-wide initiatives, and shape the future of Ampol's retail network.

Equal Opportunity

We're an equal opportunity workplace. We not only embrace diversity and inclusion; we celebrate what makes you unique. We welcome applications from people of all ages, cultural backgrounds, and diverse sexualities and genders. We also highly encourage Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to apply for roles with Ampol.
