Research Fellow in Climate and Fluid Physics – ANU
The Research School of Earth Sciences is Australia's leading academic program in Earth and Marine Science, with a focus on the Earth system from climate change to deep earth processes. We seek applications from motivated and creative scientists for a new tenure-track position in Climate & Fluid Physics. The successful candidate will develop and lead a world-class research portfolio and contribute to research-led teaching and training in Climate & Fluid Physics. We aim to attract researchers who can undertake novel work on the fluid dynamics of the climate system, including turbulence and the circulation of the ocean and atmosphere.
Position overviewThe Climate & Fluid Physics group conducts research into the dynamics and thermodynamics of the ocean, atmosphere, cryosphere and land surface. Current work includes the fluid mechanics of basal melt for the Antarctic ice sheet, development of Australia's next high‑resolution global ocean‑sea ice model (ACCESS-OM2), and thermodynamic approaches integrating water cycle observations and modelling across land and ocean. The appointment will strengthen capabilities in fundamental and applied fluid mechanics.
We welcome and develop diversity of backgrounds, experiences and ideas and encourage applications from individuals who may have had non-traditional career paths, who may have taken a career break, or who have achieved excellence outside of academia.
Responsibilities- Develop and lead a world-class research portfolio in Climate & Fluid Physics.
- Contribute to research-led teaching and research training activities in Climate & Fluid Physics.
- Undertake novel research on the fluid dynamics of the climate system, including turbulence and ocean/atmosphere circulation.
- Collaborate across groups and contribute to ongoing projects such as climate/ocean modelling and thermodynamic analyses.
This position will be for an initial period of seven years, with the option of renewal or conversion at the end of the appointment. The Australian National University offers attractive benefits and support for work-life balance, including four weeks paid vacation per year, relocation assistance, and a 17% employer contribution to superannuation. The role also includes generous parental leave, flexible and part-time working options, parental and aged care support, dual-career hire programs, school holiday programs, and on-campus childcare facilities.
College and diversityThe ANU College of Science comprises several schools and institutes, with a tradition of research excellence and global recognition. The University actively encourages applications from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
