Role Summary and PurposeThe Senior Underwriter is responsible for underwriting all new and existing portfolio of business within set guidelines, authority levels, and service standards. The role includes mentoring and developing Underwriters and reporting to senior management. The Senior Underwriter maintains a professional approach in all stakeholder interactions, managing effective, compliant, and profitable underwriting for Arch Insurance within a dedicated portfolio or product.
Key Tasks and Responsibilities- Underwrite within limitations of company policy and standards.
- Prepare reports on portfolio performance and maintain credit control.
- Participate in audits, Peer Review Process, and compliance activities.
- Ensure documentation accuracy and compliance with organizational guidelines.
- Collaborate with stakeholders to maximize opportunities, minimize expenses, and meet operational targets.
- Underwrite public and product liability products to ensure profitability and contribute to book value.
- Maintain and develop broker relationships through visits and high-level customer service.
- Provide timely service and administer tasks efficiently.
- Develop new business opportunities through broker networking.
- Assist in product development and implement distribution strategies.
- Ensure compliance with laws, regulations, and standards.
- Apply sound underwriting practices for new business, alterations, and renewals.
- Process and document issuance of policies, renewals, and endorsements accurately.
- Maintain clear underwriting notes and correspondence records.
- Respond to broker requests promptly.
- Keep reporting spreadsheets current.
- Manage business development, portfolio performance, and profitability.
- Build long-term relationships with stakeholders.
- Contribute to underwriting strategy and act as a referral point.
- Travel as required by the business.
- Support and mentor team members, providing guidance and feedback.
- Support the manager in overseeing junior staff.
- Lead by example and provide guidance to the team.
- Collaborate with other business units.
- Adhere to policies, procedures, legislation, and local guidance.
- Perform other duties as directed within the role's scope.
- Experience in financial services with legislative knowledge.
- Ability to grow a profitable portfolio.
- Minimum 5 years in a similar role.
- Tertiary qualifications are desirable.
- Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Ability to develop and maintain stakeholder relationships.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Organized, methodical, and deadline-oriented.
- Extensive knowledge of Australian insurance regulations and compliance.
- Strong analytical skills with attention to detail.
- Enthusiastic team player with the ability to work independently.
- Market presence and negotiation skills.
- High service orientation for external stakeholders.
- Problem-solving skills within underwriting guidelines.
- Knowledge of products, practices, and market dynamics.
