About the opportunity

Small-scale fisheries account for 40% of global fish catch, employ 90% of fishers worldwide, and are vital for food security, poverty reduction, and sustainable resource use. Fisheries co-management is widely regarded as an effective governance approach, but its impacts vary depending on context.

This postdoctoral position aims to conduct a global assessment of fisheries co-management programs to develop a typology, understand governance patterns, and link these to social and ecological impacts.

The fellow will work closely with the Wildlife Conservation Society to support their Community Fisheries program, leveraging long-term partnerships in over 30 countries with Indigenous Peoples, local communities, governments, and other stakeholders.

Research will be conducted independently or as part of a team, including report and publication writing, and co-supervision of postgraduate students. The researcher will communicate regularly with WCS leadership and field programs.

What you can bring to the role

  • PhD in a relevant social or natural science (e.g., natural resource economics, geography, ecology, fisheries science), with experience in social-ecological systems and aquatic resources
  • Strong quantitative and data analysis skills
  • Interdisciplinary skills across social sciences, economics, and natural sciences
  • Experience in assessments, systematic reviews, and data communication
  • Excellent interpersonal and stakeholder collaboration skills
  • Project management and independent work ability, including remotely and under deadlines
