Financial Accountant

About the role

The Financial Accountant is key member of the team, responsible for a range of financial accounting services across Peter Mac. The role helps support the integrity of financial information reported to the organisation at month-end and year-end. The position has a strong focus on ensuring accurate payroll and revenue data is reported, all relevant accruals and prepayments are captured, balance sheet reconciliations are completed in a timely manner and all assigned financial reporting tasks and submissions are completed in line with reporting and lodgement deadlines.

About you

To be successful in this role you'll bring with you:
  • Bachelor Degree or higher in Accounting/Commerce
  • A minimum of 3-5 years of Financial Accounting or Professional Services Accounting experience.
  • Membership of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Australia (ICAA) and/or Certified Practising Accountants of Australia (CPA)
  • Demonstrated technical accounting experience with month-end processing, reconciliations and reporting.
  • Proven capability to analyse data, prepare recommendations and communicate clearly with stakeholders at all levels of the organisation.
  • Proven ability to build rapport and strong professional relationships with a range of stakeholders whilst managing competing priorities.
  • Candidates with strong payroll accounting experience with complex EBA structures would be looked upon favourably.
  • Intermediate to Advanced knowledge of Excel. Experience with MagiQ and Oracle will be highly regarded.

Position Summary

1. Payroll Accounting

Lead the payroll accounting processes including the development of annual organisation-wide budget assumptions, month end processing and forecasting.
Lead the annual organisation-wide payroll budgeting process, monitoring and forecasting.
Organisation-wide payroll budget assumptions include sick leave, annual leave, allowances, penalties and public holiday penalties as well as any relevant EBA changes.
Monitor all Payroll data and ensure the provision of accurate and timely financial reports, including FTE data.
Ensure the mapping of all Payroll data from the Payroll system to the budgeting and reporting system is accurate and easy to reconcile.
Coordinate the budgets and journals for internal Payroll recharges relating to Payroll.
Coordinate the budgets and invoices external recoveries relating to Payroll, ensuring EBA increments are passed on in a timely manner.
Provide recommendations for process improvements on an ongoing basis to assist the Finance Department achieve best practice.
  • Month end journals and reconciliations are accurate and timely.
  • Review of EBA changes and accrue for expired EBAs.
  • Accurate annual organisation-wide payroll budget assumptions.
  • Accurate payroll monitoring and forecasting against the annual budget.
  • Accurate and timely payroll reports, reconciled back to budget and between systems.
  • Internal recoveries budgeted and transferred as requested and agreed with the respective divisions.
  • Evidence of leading continuous improvements in financial processes, procedures, systems and reporting.
2. Revenue Accounting
Lead the revenue accounting processes including: analysis of the annual funding guidelines and regular reconciliations of funding to budget month end processing and forecasting.
Monitor all revenue streams and ensure the provision of accurate and timely financial reports, with ongoing reviews and reconciliations back to budget.
Lead the University of Melbourne monthly claim process including preparation, review and analysis of revenue and cost reporting.
Lead the Building Partner monthly and quarterly invoicing process regarding Building and PPP costs.
Ensure all external funds are appropriately invoiced and funds received in a timely manner to support expenditure.
Provide recommendations for process improvements on an ongoing basis to assist the Finance Department achieve best practice.
  • Funding guidelines reconcile to the annual budget held in general ledger with risks and changes identified.
  • Month end journals and reconciliations are accurate and timely.
  • Accurate revenue monitoring and forecasting against the annual budget.
  • Accurate and timely funding reports, reconciled back to budget.
  • Timely invoicing and receipt of all funds relating to external funding.
  • Evidence of leading continuous improvements in financial processes, procedures, systems and reporting.

3. Internal and External Reporting

Lead the internal Payroll and Revenue financial reporting processes, including month end, to ensure the provision of accurate and timely information.
Lead the external Payroll and Revenue reporting processes, including DH reports and Grant funding acquittals
Identify and evaluate financial risks and opportunities from an organisational perspective.
  • Provision of accurate and timely month end financials and associated reports.
  • Monthly Balance Sheet reconciliations are accurate and timely.
  • Provision of accurate and timely external reports.
  • Provision of high quality analysis to identify and evaluate financial risks and opportunities.
4. Stakeholder Management and Communication
  • Strong partnerships with key stakeholders, including University of Melbourne, Internal and External Auditors. Peter Mac receives an unqualified audit.
5. Project Work and Other Support as Required

Project work to ensure continuous improvement for all Finance processes.

Supporting other areas of the Finance Division as required.
  • Evidence of contributing to broader continuous improvement initiatives or deliverables within the Finance Division and/or Peter Mac.
