Overview

Responsibilities
  • Assist teachers by performing a variety of tasks that promote student learning and well-being
  • Work individually and in small groups to reinforce instruction, monitor performance, and support learning
  • Provide instructional and classroom management supports, and related clerical tasks to support teachers and other professional staff
  • Assist with self-care plans and daily living activities (e.g., toileting, feeding, personal hygiene, dressing) as required
  • Physically assist students to engage in activities, including walking, eating, and, when trained, medication administration or treatments
  • Support students with special needs and manage behaviors as directed
  • May require outside duty, flexible scheduling, and travel between locations or programs
Physical Demands & Special Requirements
  • Frequent bending, walking, running, and lifting up to 50 pounds; movement of wheelchairs may be required
  • May involve assisting with toileting, feeding, and other daily living activities
  • May require training in administration of medications (e.g., G-tube feedings, catheterization)
  • Continues planned instructional activities during teacher's temporary absence
  • Comply with COMAR 13A.05.05.08 (D) and other relevant regulations; outside duty may be required

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Knowledge of child development, instructional strategies, and MCPS policies
  • Ability to support the instructional program and monitor student behavior
  • Patience and ability to work effectively with children, young adults, and staff
  • Effective written and verbal communication; ability to read/write/speak English
  • Ability to interact with and support students with special needs
  • Proficiency with standard desktop software (e.g., MS Office) and relevant databases
  • Familiarity with the seven core SSPGS competencies
Education, Training & Experience
  • Requirements are listed in order of preference:
  • 1) AA degree required; Bachelor's preferred; coursework related to education and behavior management; or 2-4 years of relevant experience in a structured educational setting
  • 2) At least 48 college credits and two years of education-related experience
  • 3) Two years of education-related experience plus successful completion of the ParaPro Assessment (score 455+)
  • 4) Any combination of applicable education, training, and experience
  • Certificate/Licensure: None required
