Responsibilities
  • Under the direction of the principal, perform a variety of tasks that promote student learning and well-being to support students with Individualized Education Programs (IEP).
  • Assist students in learning activities, may participate with students off school grounds as required, and support academic, behavioral, social, emotional, and physical needs.
  • Facilitate student mastery of grade-level curriculum or Alternate Academic Achievement Standards and manage behaviors that impact access to the curriculum.
  • Provide instructional and classroom management supports, as well as related clerical tasks to support teachers and other professional staff in all classrooms or learning environments.
  • Assist with general education classes and/or specialized instructional settings; may be pulled out for individualized or small group reinforcement of instruction.
  • Participate in planned instructional activities during teacher absences and support a smooth, continuous learning environment.
Qualifications
  • Education, Training, and Experience: One of the following in order of preference:
  • 1) Associate's degree (required) with Bachelor's preferred; coursework in education-related fields such as behavior management or instructional strategies; one year of experience with students in structured educational settings preferred.
  • 2) At least 48 college credits and two years of experience in a structured setting (e.g., daycare, pre-school, etc.).
  • 3) Two years of experience in structured settings such as daycare, pre-school, after-school, or school/non-school departments; successful ParaPro Assessment with a qualifying score of 455+ is required.
  • 4) Any combination of applicable education, training, and experience that provides the necessary knowledge, abilities, and skills.
  • CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: None.
    • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of child development, instructional strategies, and MCPS policies; ability to support instructional programs, monitor student behavior, communicate effectively, and use standard computer tools (Google Workspace, MS Office, web-based tools); ability to learn SSPGS core competencies.
    Physical Demands & Special Requirements
    • Frequent bending, walking, and lifting up to 50 pounds; may be required.
    • Outside duty may be required; flexible scheduling and change of location/program as needed.
    • Continues planned instructional activities during teacher absences; may require specific training.
    Notes

All new paraeducators are hired at a grade 15 with potential for promotion to grade 16 after six-month probation and required training hours.
