Economist, Australian Energy Market Commission

Australian Energy Market Commission (AEMC) Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.

The Australian Energy Market Commission (AEMC) is an independent rule maker and advisor for the National Electricity Market, natural gas market and related retail markets. It facilitates rule changes, carries out reviews and provides the nation's Energy Ministers with advice on the design of regulatory and energy market arrangements. The AEMC is developing the right market settings to improve Australia's future productivity and living standards by contributing to a decarbonising, affordable and reliable energy system for consumers, through the transition and beyond.

We have an exciting opportunity to join our Economics team as an economist. The economist role allows you to apply microeconomics and econometrics to real-world energy policy, to promote the long-term interests of energy consumers and support a transition to a net zero energy sector. You would join a supportive team environment with flexible work arrangements.

Your main responsibilities in this challenging role include:

  1. Providing economic advice and recommendations to ensure high-quality economic analysis and reasoning in policy development and project decision-making;
  2. Applying analytical frameworks, building models, and conducting econometric analysis, using advanced economic concepts and analyses to draw robust insights;
  3. Contributing to thought leadership on current developments and emerging trends in the energy sector;
  4. Facilitating knowledge transfer and promoting a better understanding of how economic concepts relate to the operation of the energy market;
  5. Communicating complex issues or concepts in a way that is accessible to a wide range of stakeholders, including internal policymakers, consumers, industry participants, and government.

We are looking for candidates with:

  1. Tertiary qualifications in economics, commerce and/or other relevant disciplines;
  2. A background in microeconomics and/or econometrics would be an advantage, as would knowledge or modelling experience of gas and/or electricity markets;
  3. A minimum of 2 - 5 years relevant work experience in a policy, research and/or regulatory role involving the application of economic concepts and analysis to decision-making processes;
  4. Outstanding written and verbal communication skills with the ability to explain economic concepts to stakeholders and non-technical audiences;
  5. The ability to work autonomously with a proactive approach and to have the strong interpersonal skills necessary to build effective partnerships with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders;
  6. A flexible and innovative approach to problem-solving which takes into account diverse views and requirements;
  7. Demonstrated analytical skills, including quantitative skills and the proven ability to understand complex subject matters quickly.

We are an equal opportunities employer and are committed to being an inclusive, diverse, flexible and supportive workplace where differences are valued and where all our people can thrive. We invite candidates of all gender expressions, ages, ethnicities, and other culturally diverse groups to apply.

Applications are open until Friday, 7 February 2025 and we will process and progress applications as they are received. To apply, please send a copy of your resume and cover letter expressing your interest and suitability for the role to careers@aemc.gov.au.
