Based out of Cairns, you'll be at the heart of building strong relationships with local residents, community groups, and key stakeholders across Tropical North Queensland.

Your role will be all about making sure people feel heard, included, and involved in what we do regarding eco-tourism and environmental initiatives. You'll play a key role in developing and delivering engagement strategies that build trust, encourage participation and foster long-term partnerships.

About The Role

As our Community and Stakeholder Engagement Officer, you'll play a key role in developing and delivering engagement strategies that build trust, encourage participation and foster long-term partnerships. You'll work closely with residents, community groups, and stakeholders to understand their needs, share information and co-create solutions that make a meaningful impact to eco-tourism and environmental initiatives across Tropical Queensland.

Key Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain positive relationships with community members, local groups, and key stakeholders.
  • Plan and deliver engagement events, workshops, and consultation activities.
  • Develop communication materials and use digital tools to promote initiatives and gather feedback.
  • Represent the department at community forums, meetings, and public events alongside senior staff and subject matter experts.
  • Monitor engagement activities, evaluate impact, and report on outcomes.
  • Ensure all engagement practices are inclusive, accessible, and culturally appropriate.

About You

We're looking for someone who is a confident communicator, a great listener and passionate about community engagement. You'll need to be organised, adaptable and capable of working both independently and as part of a team.

We're Looking For An Experienced Engagement Professional With
  • A strong understanding of best practice community and stakeholder engagement.
  • Depth of experience defining, planning and implementing effective place-based community/stakeholder engagement for complex projects.
  • Strong interpersonal skills required to communicate, interact, influence and build relationships with community and stakeholders, and proven ability to work collaboratively with stakeholders including First Nations peoples.
  • Strong writing skills including preparation of complex information, including briefing notes for senior staff, in a short concise manner and the ability to tailor information to audience needs.
  • Experience in managing contentious issues of public interest and strong problemsolving skills to devise and deliver appropriate actions, and contingencies in times of uncertainty.
