The Compliance Branch is responsible for monitoring and enforcing compliance with Australia's foreign investment laws. The Compliance Branch's role is to provide assurance of compliance with the foreign investment framework, which it does through a range of activities including proactive investigations and other forms of compliance assessment, enforcement action to address non-compliance, and educating foreign investors on the requirements of the foreign investment legislation.

We're seeking applications from experienced and motivated team members for a position in the Compliance Branch.

Responsibilities
  • undertaking proactive and responsive compliance activities to assess compliance with Australia's foreign investment laws and prevent and detect non-compliance
  • investigating potential non-compliance with Australia's foreign investment laws
  • using analytical capability and professional judgement to evaluate compliance and recommend effective responses
  • conducting initial analysis of compliance reports
  • analysing data to identify compliance trends
  • assisting the development of internal guidance and procedures to support best practice compliance operations.
  • manage concurrent cases, including complex cases, projects or investigations
  • interpret and apply legislation, administrative law principles and regulatory frameworks when assessing complex and specialised issues to make evidence-based recommendations on foreign investment matters
  • investigate and deliver regulatory outcomes, including to analyse information and data, plan and carry out investigations, gather evidence, legal analysis and other enforcement-related processes
  • contribute to regulatory risk assessments to identify priorities for compliance operational activity and evaluating outcomes of those compliance activities
  • help to develop and implement policies, procedures and systems to support the lawful administration of the Foreign Acquisitions and Takeovers Act 1975
  • contribute to various business and process improvement initiatives.
Desirable Qualifications / Experience
  • Experience in administering legislation to support regulatory decisions and outcomes
  • Excellent interpersonal, and oral and written communications skills including the ability to liaise and engage with stakeholders at all levels
  • Ability to develop strong relationships with stakeholders; and collaborate and reconcile alternative positions to achieve timely and robust outcomes
  • Critical thinking skills to identify issues and potential solutions
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise strong attention to detail in analysis and written and oral communication
  • Organisational skills and the ability to manage competing priorities
  • Sound judgment and resilience to achieve objectives in challenging, fast-paced environments
  • Ability to work independently and use initiative to achieve desired outcomes
  • Qualifications in law, accounting, commerce and/or finance are highly desirable but not essential.
